So it's finally happened? D&D reduced to board games...

From the 4e forum: Reading the whole message, it seems that the guy bought (at least) the DM's Kit, both Heroes books and the PHB2. So one Ravenloft board game sale just generated over $170 of revenue and five new D&D players for WotC. There is NO way that this was unintended. The...

So it's finally happened? D&D reduced to board games...

Three times, actually. Good art; horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE game play.

Which edition change changed the game the most?

In terms of character building, absolutely 4e. But in terms of how the game is played, 4e doesn't come close to 3e. I call 3e the "champions-ification" of d&d. I never used a battlemap for D&D up through 2e. The day 3e came out, a battlemap became indispensible. Monster creation changed...

One of my players wants to make a new power

I'd do it with a bit more flavor: CURSE OF HEMOPHILIA --- Wizard Attack 9 Daily * Arcane, Implement, Necomancy Standard Action -- Area burst 1 within 10 Target: Each creature in burst Attack: Intelligence vs. Fortitude Hit: Ongoing 5 damage and the target is dazed (save ends). If the target...

Playing a character while DMing. Yes or No?

As long as the character is a background character (e.g. not the main protagonist) and less powerful (not even equally powerful), I'd say it's no problem at all. only when the DMPC (the acronym for such characters) starts being the center of attention does the character become a potential problem.

    Death of D&D Miniatures

I was a maxminis regular for many years. The reason sales declined was simple- people already had everything they really needed. As early as Underdark I saw that later sets would simply not be worth my while. My analysis- give the market time to absorb all the figures floating around. I'd...

    Thief + to hit crazy?

Not true. The rogue always had weapon talent with the dagger. All essentials does is allow the rogue to swing a rapier with the same talent. Same accuracy, slightly more damage. You can make the case that the right type of pre-essentials rogue build would be getting CA a lot more than half...

What if WotC just said "That's it."

Easy and confident answer- I would keep on playing. Why do I know this? Because I remember when the AD&D universe was composed of the core 3, fiend folio and deities and demigods. I never even considered the possibility that more hardback would be published, and it seemed like a loooooong...

An invitation only game sales site... and I have invitations

Sure, I'll bite- I'd like an invitation. Should we send private messages, or is a post good enough?

Borders trouble, could lead to BIG TROUBLE!

To address the OP's concern, I think Wizards, Paizo and other companies operating on Account with Borders are likely not in any horrendous trouble (I say this with crossed fingers). In either type of Bankruptcy (Chapter 11 restructuring vs. Chapter 7 liquidation), Stakeholders owed on account...

    List of Broken Powers

Moment of Glory trumps Astral Condemnation for general utility in a big way. Send your 4-man level 3 party against 5 4th level orcs and astral condemnation will produce a modest advantage that will mitigate less than 20% of the damage against the party. Moment of Glory, on the other hand...

Warhammer fantasy roleplay disaster, what happened

Hmm, a couple of comments. (1) Grave's character was petty, selfish and opportunistic. A sterling example of Unaligned (Or chaotic neutral in the earlier editions of D&D). He only wanted to kill someone after that guy dealt him a serious injury. That's petty, not evil. He wanted to steal...

    Expedition to Castle Ravenloft

This is opinion, obviously... The Authors fell in love with the novelty of including every. single. horror. sub-genre. The original ravenloft was all about high gothic horror, Universal-studios style. In this one, you encounter: (1) A zombie plague (2) A Serial Killer right out of some...

    2010 Retrospective: 1Q Products

Not a great batch, frankly. PHB3 suffers, I think, from following the exceptional PHB2. It does add Superior Implements and Skill Powers, which are both excellent. The classes, though... * The monk is exceptional * The seeker and Runepriest proved to be unpopular * the core psionic...

    And in 2011...

The fact that they included a non-errated version of a fighter power that is completely dominated by one printed in Martial Power (and for good reason) in the weaponmaster preview seriously ratcheted down my anticipation for Heroes of Sword and Spell.

RPGA Reward Tomb of Horrors - Looking to Trade

Hi Stumblewyk, I have plenty to trade in terms of miniatures- I was a HEAVY DDM collector back in the day, so I can set you up with scads of miniatures. What in particular are you looking for, PCs and monsters both? I can offer: (1) Orc Raiding Party (say 8 orcs of varied sculpts) (2)...

Crazy Plot Changes for a Song of Ice and Fire Game

You don't really need to change the plot that dramatically to make your characters the main heroes. What is the scope of the campaign? Are you going to use the coming of the Others as your main threat? If you are, then practically nothing needs to change- Jon Snow, Daenarys and anyone else...

WotC is *NOT* Evil: THE FINALE

It's nothing of the sort. The legal department isn't a third party, for one. If your boss tells you, "don't do X," do you think that it is unreasonable and impolite to respond to a request for X by saying "I'm not allowed to do this due to instructions by my superiors?" Wizards holds very...

    Fighter Slayer preview

Why use pyromancer when evoker is still available? I do very much like the concept of the slayer- it does indeed fill a niche currently vacant. Trying to build a character like- say- Jaime Lannister from a Song of Ice and Fire was difficult. The dex secondary definitely promotes hide use, but...
