    The Essentials Fighter

Skills certainly matter no less. All the 1/2 level thing does is add in a "seasoned adventurer" bonus, for all intents and purposes. A 12th level fighter, for example, has a better chance of sneaking up on a camp of 1st level kobolds than a 1st level fighter. He's worked in armor a lot more...

    Lolth!

Ah, I wasn't talking about a blanket replacement- should've been more nuanced when I said it. Marking effects would be an obvious exception. Can't think of any other off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are some. I think your version is probably better, if not longer in wording...

    Lolth!

I'm considering replacing "until end of turn" effects with "(any attempted save ends this effect)." In Lolth's case, it would make her absolutely immune to "until end of turn" effects, but hey... she's a god.

    Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition

Wow, just this change makes me want to pick up the new edition to look at it. I hated seeing 35+ dex characters all over the place because the figured stats made it so friggin' cheap at 3 per.

    Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition

Well, my memories of back then are way hazy- I thought I remembered buying GURPS 3e back in 1989, and that the Fantasy Trip WAS 1e. Going back to my books, I see that it's 2e, and the Fantasy Trip is not listed as an edition of GURPS. So 24 or 25 years it is. Four editions in 25 years is...

New character: Avenger (I admit I have doubts...)

Hammer Rythm simply isn't as awesome for avengers as it is for everybody else. The loss of the High Crit property does hurt- I will certainly grant that. But- at least until you get out of the heroic tier- it's only slightly better on 1[w] attacks due to high crit and it falls behind on 2[w]...

New character: Avenger (I admit I have doubts...)

I agree with most of what people say above, except the bit about the fullblade- go Mordenkrad. The advantage of the full blade over the Mordenkrad- the +1 attack bonus- is nowhere near as useful for an avenger as it is for a barbarian, warlord or fighter. The extra damage per attack will be...

    Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition

That's not really true. Many of the most famous RPG lines have a history of long periods between editions. Hero is technically on its 6th edition, though only 3 have been published in the past 20 years. GURPS is on its 4th edition after 30 years Storyteller is on its 2nd edition after 19...

    Quick dice probability question

the difference that dedekind alluded to is that the two-roll method is non-linear. The 6% difference is at 15+ is not the largest difference- the largest is at 10. Only 25% of all results of the two-roll method are 10 or less, whereas 35% of d20+3 are 10 or less. Either method makes a...

    Wisdom???

... which implies that any specific algorithm imparts a limited amount of "wisdom" to the computer. In this case, the ability to assimilate and process data is only as good as its algorithm, which is knowledge applied in a practical fashion as opposed to raw knowledge proper. A better example...

    Why all the ritual hate?

I do agree that the ten minute casting time seems a touch excessive. The same effect (not allowing it during combat) could have been achieved with a one minute casting time. I guess they really, really wanted it to take a backseat to thievery. Of course, the fact that the bonuses stack is a...

    Why all the ritual hate?

I'm not trying to be flippant here- honest. I don't see why, exactly, it is poorly designed. A character with thievery paid a cost for having thievery- essentially one feat (yes, you can argue less than one feat, since he can take the multiclass feat, but that comes with the opportunity cost...

    Why all the ritual hate?

I, personally, don't have any skin in this game- I find rituals rather bland, but haven't thought about them enough to have an informed opinion. I do have to point out, however, that your exact argument, twisted backwards, was used dozens (if not hundreds) of times to argue that magic was far...

    D&D 4E What Doesn't 4E Do Well?

If it were against all damage I'd agree with you- no verisimilitude problem. But it's only against ranged attacks, which makes it situational already. Regardless, I probably should've included a more glaring example. The point being that the earlier books include more "gamey" elements at a...

    D&D 4E What Doesn't 4E Do Well?

... or modify them to make them balanced again once you change them. Take the shield of deflection, for example. You can make it apply to only AC and Reflex and bring it down two levels, to level 10/20. Or you can make the resistance 7/15 instead of 5/10. But you have a valid point...

    D&D 4E What Doesn't 4E Do Well?

I don't think that my main complaint is a system-level issue so much as it is an exception-level issue. The early books tended to scrub out flavor-specific rules in order to either make the game simpler or to make sure all power sources were nearly equal. Take a look at Shield of Deflection in...

    Leveling assumptions then and now

Which particular minority are you referring to? What posts? It's crystal clear to anyone who started in 1e that the game has evolved, whether you like it or not. A few more comments: Having DMed 1e up to 14th level, I can testify that the game essentially capped out well before then (10th to...

What adventure module defines D&D to you?

I wonder how many the the B2'ers got their start during the '79 to '84 heyday. Keep was the module packed in with the basic set during the majority of that time. It may just be a matter of sheer print run- I'm betting that the number of copies of Keepin print absolutely dwarf every other module...

A new monster class: the Underling

I absolutely LOVE the concept of a minion, and I think the implementation is great on paper. But in practice, minions sorta fall flat in terms of player excitement. (1) Minions seem too weak for their xp. Four minions don't come close to matching a standard creature of that level...

Wizards in 4E have been 'neutered' argument...

It's important to keep in mind that there's a difference between being able to cast a ritual and being able to cast a ritual well. Yes, a fighter can learn how to cast rituals with some investment of time- he needs to spend two feats at the minimum, since arcana is not a class feat- but...
