Allow them to each speak to their type of animal with no need for a spell or magic item. Or allow them to summon a single animal of the type they are assciated with to perform one non-combat task per day. Or allow them to track the type of animal with which they are associated without error.

I can say with certainty that I know enough about the effect of such layoffs on workers and their families to make the call that they are not a good thing.
