    D&D 5E (2014) Q&A 10/17/13 - Crits, Damage on Miss, Wildshape

Damage on a miss is the kind of mechanics we get when people don't spank their children. (yes im joking- mostly -don't use the dumb thing if it's not workin for you)

    D&D 5E (2014) Small races overly disadvantaged?

Gnomes in 1E get: - infravision - defense bonus vs. giant class creatures - special abilities in underground settings - significant bonus to save vs. magic - +1 vs. kobolds and goblins they were also the only ones who could multi to illusionist there were also odd class/level limits...

When and how did you learn to play D&D?

Your text is unreadable, dark grey on black. I first heard of D&D via friends/osmosis, but wasn't allowed to play due to the Satanic Scare, until a year later. That was a WHOLE CHILDHOOD YEAR of seeing Moldvay, then Mentzer sets, in the toy store, and denied their arcane secrets. After that...

Sexism in Table-Top Gaming: My Thoughts On It, and What We Can Do About It

That's right, the women are smarter (cue Grateful Dead) hey IDK about INT, but is it not measurably true that females psychologically mature ahead of males? Maybe from now on IMC, males have -1 to WIS. Only female clerics/druids can get to 18 naturally.... I'll send a letter to Wizards asking...

    D&D 5E (2014) My #1 hope for D&D Next

Great thread, thank you OP, though I havent read it all ; ) I'm heartened to see people come together on the topic of ADVENTURES. My #1 hope for 5E is quality, exciting adventures of all types. The core rules, hey let's face it... WE ALREADY KNOW HOW TO PLAY!!!! : ) Me, I've been hand...

    Sweet-spot: what's the "magic level?"

I agree....WOW LOOK AT ALL THE GAMERS AGREEING.... : ) Though I have found that lower levels are hugely fun. A lot of the "balance" (i so hate that term these days) issues 4E and etc. addresses can be found with a good old Wand or Staff. In the OD&D (with chainmail) game I played, casters...

How do you feel about DMPCs?

I think that can be ok, but those characters the DM plays should not IMO receive full XP, because the DM's NPC has to be played with one arm behind its back, so to speak. Puzzles, NPC interactions, questions asked, access to dungeon maps, etc. All of this makes the "DMPC" a half entity, and I...

How do you feel about DMPCs?

a DMPC - can't actually exist - there are too many conflicts in terms of game data. You can't run a PC as DM. Meaning, you can't FULLY participate as a player - one main reason being, the UNKNOWN is a defining characteristic of being on an adventure. I suppose two players could use completely...

D&D 5E (2014) What are/will be the main beefs of D&D Next relative to other editions?

My main beef is the rules clutter, which is causing a *bleep* and alienation. The 5E team, while understanding the actual core (gygax/arneson), seem a bit "design happy". So they add a lot of clutter, then say its optional. 1E is quite like this, but that is not the element of AD&D they should...

    D&D 5E (2014) Q&A 10/17/13 - Crits, Damage on Miss, Wildshape

so, this ability only works for fighters with one-handed weapons? Even so I'm not seeing why the reach and damage of two-handers is negated. At any rate, all I get from this goofy house rule is the reminder to give fighters cool stuff for weapons training. It doesn't appear to be difficult to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Q&A 10/17/13 - Crits, Damage on Miss, Wildshape

Well. I don't like the proposed 1/2 damage on miss, either, but its not that extreme. The developers are very clear that the DM has arbitration, and the rule is optional. Its also presented as something a fighter trains for, so that implies at some level higher than 1st, and most likely at great...

    D&D 5E (2014) Q&A 10/17/13 - Crits, Damage on Miss, Wildshape

I have also fought with swords, as well as hands and feet, and I believe what you are describing is STR bonus to hit, perhaps with an extra bonus for rage type effect. Damage on a failed roll. I can't get behind that.

    D&D 5E (2014) Q&A 10/17/13 - Crits, Damage on Miss, Wildshape

you're completely confusing the saving throw with an attack roll. Saving throw effects depend on the spell and circumstances (cover, etc.) And yes, area effect spells make sense in-game doing 1/2 damage on a successful save, particularly those spells with no to-hit roll - The 5E rule is to...

Sexism in Table-Top Gaming: My Thoughts On It, and What We Can Do About It

Sexism, and racism for that matter, exist. We don't need to prove that here. It is a given, and we should listen to each other, especially those belonging to historically suppressed populations, to eliminate it from our games. Which most everyone is doing, and I applaud.

    D&D 5E (2014) Whats your dealbreaker for 5E?

I don't have a dealbreaker, its just that I already house rule better than 5E does, using an authentic D&D (by its original authors) core. I'd have to hack 5E to pieces to do what I already do. Things I dislike: - advantage/disadvantage dice bogging - stupidly overpowered cantrips -...

Sexism in Table-Top Gaming: My Thoughts On It, and What We Can Do About It

That is a matter of style. The style of D&D by Arneson and Gygax is more adventure game oriented - mapping, avoiding combat, maintaining your strength for when you need it. Violence occurs in most any adventure, but is not its focus. elfwitch: Paladins in scanty armor is indeed an...

Sexism in Table-Top Gaming: My Thoughts On It, and What We Can Do About It

Adventuring is the draw, IMO, of D&D. Avoiding violence whenever possible is firmly at the root of the adventure RPG. (I just played Temple of the Frog - 2 men, 2 women players) Personally, I think rules crunch, which is mostly combat, is off-putting to most people who might otherwise be...

D&D 5E (2014) Character creation and general game impressions.

My problem with advantage/disadvantage was there was a LOT of it in that session, and I don't like the effect it has on the combat - big time waster , oh but wait, I have disadvantage on that, wait, do I? for x more rounds... thats not adventure mechanics to me. Rolling two dice, forced to take...

Sexism in Table-Top Gaming: My Thoughts On It, and What We Can Do About It

I hold doors for people, not just women I find pretty. I think it is good to discuss gender equality - sexism hurts men as well, perhaps just as much, as women. It sucks for everybody. At a convention last weekend, I estimate it was around 20% female gamers. So, if we want the hobby to expand...
