D&D 5E (2014) Character creation and general game impressions.

Thats cool. I had a very negative experience with a playtest of 5E, but am interested in other impressions. I think the negative experience was mostly due to a poorly written adventure, which actually had no adventure to it whatsoever. It was 75% soap opera mystery with NPCs you had no reason to...

    Do anything cool recently?

Cool stuff above ^ in a tournament last weekend, I played the gorgeous elf magic-user, and while flying and mirror-imaged above a dracolich's lair in a volcano, I cast "Hold Undead" from a scroll, which was a DM misprint, and the dracolich blew both its MR and saving throw. The fighters did...

I think buff spells are eroding my enjoyment of D&D.

How about this: make a bunch of slider/indicators, and then just have reducing them come at the end of the round? Personally, I don't like buff-heavy mechanics, and play rules light, but thats no solution within the context of your problem. Make these things out of cardboard, or wood. Or use...

Old School Sensibilities with Ernie Gygax and Tim Kask

The page seems broken, only one line from Ernie is visible, no sign of audio. Hopefully whomever it is can fix the page. thanks though, I hope to read it...

I think buff spells are eroding my enjoyment of D&D.

One of the best checks for spellcasters in any system, except maybe 4E, is other spellcasters. Enemy spellcasters see buff stacks all the time, they have spellcraft, know to watch for it, and will always attempt Dispel Magic on them. The PC spellcasters will start adopting other non-buff...

I share your desire to not see another enlarged dwarf. Some things are just wrong.

    D&D 5E (2014) Will I like D&D Next?

If you want to focus on exploration and adventure, an important element is the need for a PC mapper in dungeons. Let the maps be complex, and getting lost should be a real peril.

Serious question - are you going to invest in D&DNext?

I think module / adventure choice is huge. The playtest I was in used a converted 4E module of very low quality. A total railroad, tons of boxed text, no way to avoid combat. Thats simply not adventuring. Then, when we were funneled into combat, it was grindy as hell, despite the DM being...

Serious question - are you going to invest in D&DNext?

Well, I've played it, and the core rules are of no interest to me, unfortunately. Its way too rules heavy. Cockblocking attacks and damage rolls , oh fun. There IS a D&D core in there, but I'd rather play the one that already works better than any of its successors (for the purpose of adventure...

    D&D 5E (2014) RPGA playtest Saturday

Hello Geeks and Advanced Geeks I'm playing in an RPGA run 5E playtest on Saturday, at a very long running convention in Schenectady. I'm going in with a fairly blank slate, but if there are any things in particular anyone here would like me to address, let me know here. I will also post a...

"Wandering Monsters" would make a good band name.

    D&D 5E (2014) tool proficiencies: what's the point?

I think rules for tools (lol) are a completely unnecessary complication. Its like someone's house rules tacked on. I wish TBTB would realize that a basic D&D is the only product that has a prayer in hell of being sold along with the other games and building the hobby. That said, I look...

    Taking Cover from Spells

Cool, its a simple enough thing to include, as well as remember. I play in an all-day 1E tournament tomorrow, and ducking behind something may well come in handy, especially with those casting times intact!

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Well, this thread, and cross referencing others on other boards, has illuminated what for me is one of the biggest problems of 3.x, indeed beyond a playstyle question. The spells being cast - most of them anyway - were designed for a system with casting times, and a real threat of spell...

    Taking Cover from Spells

Hello, I came across a forgotten bit of the 1E DMG last night. There it says that taking cover from a spell attack gives a bonus to the saving throw "as noted", and that 90% cover or better grants the target a save for half/no damage. This seems an oft-overlooked? aspect of combat I plan on...

    d30 for attack rolls

Now this I like. I had a similar thought of allowing some d30 attack (with triple damage on 30) for a special effect, not sure what - a potion, a blessing, or whatever. and I like the increase in damage in dice type also. i start a new game tomorrow! i won't be using d30 attacks, that seems a...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Oh, and to N'raac, I think it was above: (my internet is on cell tower right now, its a struggle to quote) , no, I'm not judging player oratory (in diplomacy check) skill, I just love getting some dialog in those situations, even if plainly stated. A negative modifier would only occur if the...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

You are grossly misunderstanding, or arguing against something that isn't there. I have no idea why you're saying any of this to me. Reality check? A PC uses Charm Person to gain entry to the King. You haven't even touched on what happens if the Chamberlain makes his save. We'll skip that...
