    Ends justifying the means

Well, you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. From insects to humans, its in there. Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny. Not all human males , nor all animal species, will have this trait in equal amounts, but there is no question that male animals protect females.

Ah. Well, there's no question about it, really. Its in our animal nature.

D&D 5E (2014) Obvious Attack Cantrips That Should Exist

firing missiles into melee ain't too smart, either. One of the things I most hate about these "cantrips" on steroids is - thats what wands and the like are for. If a player feels they have nothing to do without super-powerful cantrips, they're just not very imaginative. But...

    Wandering Monsters article 11/13/13

Wandering monsters are the reason you have night watches, among other things. They are very important to creating the feel of being on an adventure. I allowed a current player to choose an eagle familiar - wandering monsters are here an important check to the eye in the sky - the beasties on...

perhaps this conversation is simply too nuanced for forums, as I don't know what you're talking about either

How do YOU design a dungeon?

    1. Draw Map 2. Put red dragon in largest room near end. Bonus points: have exit for dragon 3. For all other rooms, improv descriptions and/or randomly flip to MM when it seems like its time for a monster 4. Whenever a PC checks for traps, place a trap 5. Order pizza 6. Watch 'em die joking of...

D&D 5E (2014) Obvious Attack Cantrips That Should Exist

Its a fundamental misunderstanding of what cantrips are. They're parlor tricks, not lethal spells at-will. Yet another dumb move in this "5E" game. Mages should have to earn their power.

    Ends justifying the means

Legal equality is one thing. An assault is an assault, and that is good. but, equality does not mean we are the same. (I wish modern game designers understood this) Males protect females. It is a fact we are animals. Evolution is a fact. So the fact is, we have a visceral reaction to protecting...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

it does, but thats really not where the disconnect lies. The disconnect, the "whiff", narrated as much by players as DMs, is the VERY low roll, like a 2 when you needed a 19. Thats a whiff. Generally narrated as no contact made. The near-miss usually is said to be a "klunk". There is this...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Damage on a miss" poll.

Damage on a piss should be next. Fighters specially trained can still do damage equal to their Dex bonus while pissing. Males can only do this with a 1-handed weapon.

Is BECMI the Best D&D Mechanically?

I STILL have a score to settle with Bargle. as for the question - talking about "best" editions is a great recipe for thread fail. I would say all the original-based D&D's are far better, mechanically, than rumor has it.

Lesser Known Monsters - Add a Scenario

Obscure monster: VOLT (Fiend Folio, p.94-95) "Iconic" location: ambushing parties on crashed alien spaceships. The party enters a metallic room, full of blackened consoles, torn out metal cables, and dead little green men in different colored jumpsuits. An occasional spark bursts forth...

    Let's Write a Bad Module

I guess its too late for this, but what the hell: MODULAR ENCOUNTER #47: HOT DOG STAND You see a shining, metallic cart with an umbrella over the top of it. A portly, somewhat unkempt man in greasy clothes and a paper hat appears to be selling sausages for two coppers apiece. The hotdog...

Gygax Memorial Fund and Gygax Games holding Gygax Cons?

Might be the Castle, or some other unpublished work of his. There is so much Gary material I want to catch up with, mainly parts of the Living Fantasy series.

Would Paizo Make a Better Steward for Our Hobby?

We are the Stewards Paizo, WotC, TLG, Palladium... they all have awesome stuff but they are not Stewards, they are in business.

D&D 5E (2014) Evil characters material not going to be in the PHB

The anti-paladin is wankery, np seeing that relegated to house rules where it belongs. Evil spells....just go back to reversible protections, cures/harms. If there are evil alignments, those clerical spells are going to be attuned to them.

How important is it that a dungeon makes sense?

I've never had a problem making sure the river flows downhill. If you did discover such a gaffe, you just change it on the fly. It's good to leave some detail vauge for these kinds of reasons as well. It's just not all that important to have that fine a level of maps for adventure games. The...

How important is it that a dungeon makes sense?

Ha. Skill and knowledge at WHAT? Hydrology? Thats riveting adventure game material right there. Indeed the real world inspires our games, but do remember that the skill in question is adventure design, which I doubt any sneering college boy can best any of the classic authors at.

How commonly is the GM actually the ultimate arbiter?

In my game, players are not allowed flatulence, each given a plug bearing the words "ultimate arbiter".
