    D&D 5E (2014) L&L November 4th Warlock Design

Ah yes, good point. Or neutrals - I remember a guitar player in a movie who, about selling his soul to the Devil, replies, "I wasn't using it, anyway." I do hope to see some authentic demons and occasional nudity in 5E, but perhaps that will more aptly wait for the 6th.

They shouldn't shy away from the pacts being Demonic. IMO it should be an evil-only class that makes a demonic pact. For good, you have paladins and clerics. Neutrality has druids and such. Put him standing in a pentagram as well. A little Satanic scare is good for business.

    Artistic Ability

Perhaps an average of INT, WIS, DEX, and CHA would be best. But then of course you have a reaction roll as well. I'm also inclined to say children and old people have a bonus the rest of us lack, but that's just me.

How important is it that a dungeon makes sense?

There are some interesting blogs out there about The Dungeon as mythic Underworld, the concept of which I love. The doors that resist intruders with a semi-consciousness. There is powerful subconscious material there... As most people are saying - it's case by case. IMC, I have standard...

Did Dragonlance kill D&D and take its stuff? (And a Question of the Way Forward)

Except that such explanation is very well written, and all over early D&D's, for instance, p.86-87 of Gary's DMG. Not to mention the modules themselves. I'm really not getting that sandbox campaigns have died out, regardless of ruleset. As for published works, I can't really say, as I haven't...

Did Dragonlance kill D&D and take its stuff? (And a Question of the Way Forward)

As for Dragonlance - those books were a real Solace to me in those years. Many an alienated geek identified with Raistlin, and others. I never read the modules, but did mess with the 1E hardback some. So, Dragonlance to me was just another series that inspired my campaigns. I was very...

Did Dragonlance kill D&D and take its stuff? (And a Question of the Way Forward)

I very much agree here. OD&D is the core of the game. Opinions are like :):):):):):):)s, but this is what it is. It was written by Arneson and Gygax. Anything without that as its core is another RPG, corporate name rights be damned. 5E had such intent, but its mired in trying to please fans of...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

I'm telling you what the basic conventions are, because you're stuck in your head on this. A grossly low roll is most often said to be a complete miss. It's what people do. Most of the time. So, if we are now having an awesome swing on a 1, it doesn't jive. You do understand this, and I'm...

i just explained it 3 times to you. Read it again or give it up.

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

You would understand if you played with more people, I guess. Certainly your style isn't more, or less, cinematic. You just appear to be ignoring how attack rolls are generally interpreted, and quoting Gary, who probably played it more the way I'm describing anyway. A roll of 2 with your...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Nearly every RPG with a d20 attack roll, D&D included, has a 20 being awesome, a 1 is balls. Near misses are usually described as parries or armor absorption, bad misses usually not connecting at all. Now tell me that doesn't sound at all familiar. How to narrate the d20 results has thankfully...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

So, there is no precedent anywhere of a 1 being a fumble? Please. Your case is weak, the rule in question is dumb, case :):):):)ing closed.

How many arrows can an expert archer fire in a round?

As many arrows as deal a d6 or d8's worth of damage per d20 allowed. i don't think melee attacks should represent multiple swings, while ranged attacks = one missile and who wants to count off arrows anyway? I assume archer types are keeping their quivers full

What is the Greatest Dungeon Crawl Ever Published?

My most recent experience was playing Dave Arneson's TEMPLE OF THE FROG, DM'd by a gentleman who has one of the OD&D manuscripts Dave sent to Gary, and using Chainmail for combat (essentially 2d6 on a different matrix w group initiative). Doesn't get much more authentic than that, if such...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Just because combat is abstract doesn't mean it has no internal consistency. A low roll (say 1-3) NEVER means the best-placed blow ever, which was then parried. That is nonsense within abstraction. The attack roll does NOT represent the defender's efforts. AC + Dex is the defender. A well...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Ok, here is another criticism of this way dumb Heavy Weapon fighting ability: more encouragement of ability score inflation. If PCs are going to train in their weapons, there are so many better ways to reflect it. How about a Defense bonus? How about increasing the damage dice? Initiative...

Pronouns in D&D - How should gender be handled?

I vote "alternate" as well. But, I think pronouns should be avoided when possible for generics, like the DM, say: The DM is final arbiter in his campaign. The DM is final arbiter in THE campaign. Knowing that pronouns will come up, though, I think they should, in those instances...

D&D 5E (2014) The Key to 5E's Success: Inspire DMs

The popular notion of "balance" is acidic to my inspiration. I hate that word with boundless passion. 1st level characters running from a basilisk - good times. I don't need mathematical "balance" when I know what makes for fun adventure. Setting material is cool. I think its a loss leader...

    So where are you now?

I am: - playing in an AD&D campaign that's been going 20+ years - running a new O/AD&D game with no race/class/level limits - playing CoC and Pathfinder on rare occasions
