D&D 5E (2014) Limericks of the Savage Frontier

My players are currently in the middle of a festival in Triboar. In the next session I will be running a 'bard-off'; round 1 will be recitals, round 2 will be a dance off and round 3 will be a limerick competition. Unfortunately, I've been a bit under the weather and have had less time than I...

D&D 5E (2014) Rants Regarding the Corporate Castration of our Beloved Hobby

And that would be up to you. But if someone is successfully making money from it, one low effort option is to offer them the option of legitimising it in return for a significant proportion of the profits. Another, more common solution is simply to insist that it's noncommercial, like the...

    D&D 5E (2014) New challenges of power

I'd say part of answer is intrinsic to your setting; blooded characters have special abilities related to leadership roles, so as awareness of their heritage spreads they may be asked to help with formal duties; they also represent an exploitable resource as a target for bloodtheft. You could...

D&D 5E (2014) Rants Regarding the Corporate Castration of our Beloved Hobby

I am not a lawyer either, but my day job does involve some IP. And while it is true that a company has to defend its intellectual property, I don't entirely understand why they didn't just offer Orcpub a noncommercial license for the relevant content. That's basically how DMsGuild operates, and...

D&D 5E (2014) First literary concept of the "Adventuring Party"?

This is actually exactly the sort of question that's well-suited to a Stack Exchange site (probably scifi.SE, although rpg.SE might also work). Do you mind if I repost it?

D&D 5E (2014) First literary concept of the "Adventuring Party"?

Can you back that up with some examples? When I read the question I initially assumed there would be loads too, but if the essential elements are taken as: - a group of people - aspiring to be heroes but initially unknown - exceptional and complementary skills ...then there aren't as many as...

    D&D 5E (2014) New challenges of power

Whoo - Cerilia is a great setting. So you've got non-blooded characters? Or blooded non-titled?

D&D 5E (2014) First literary concept of the "Adventuring Party"?

I feel various Norse myths should qualify, even if the adventuring party is often only 2 people. For example the legend of Útgarða-Loki involves Loki and Thor and their servants Þjálfi and Röskva and a series of challenges based around the specific skills of each.

D&D 5E (2014) Young dragons, lair actions and CR

Worth remembering that nonviolent dragon encounters are possible, and might be the easiest way to have a memorable dragon interaction at low level. Greens like 'living hoards' of pet artists and bards etc, for example. That said, I just ran Tower of the Mad Mage from DMs Guild for my group last...

D&D 5E (2014) Which parts of D&D came from Tolkien?

From what I remember the Norse 'dark elf'/'svartalf' was pretty interchangeable with dwarf, wasn't it? And 'drow' were basically the Orkney version of trolls.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dm cheat sheet

I'm about to start this - good to hear someone else has tried it.

D&D 5E (2014) Read-along, zero preparation adventures: do they exist?

Sorry to sidetrack this thread but I notice there's a Kickstarter at the moment for Numenera - do we know if that's the same basic engine?

    D&D 5E (2014) A Unique Artifact/Item

Is this a one-PC campaign? If so you could keep sunlight sensitivity for flavour and run things at night, indoors, underground etc. Or give him a 'human shape' item or ability usable 1/long rest, or something. Didn't Dracula have that?

D&D 5E (2014) What would be the hierarchy of materials from weakest to strongest used in both Armor & Weapons?

It's worth noting here that iron and bronze are pretty much identical in hardness. The iron age was revolutionary because of the massively higher availability of iron ore, not because its properties were an improvement.

D&D 5E (2014) Is there any indication that WotC will launch a new setting?

I genuinely don't understand why this is so important to so many people. Unless you need AL legitimacy, why not just adapt some stuff from a previous edition? Settings are mostly fluff and monsters; fluff can be taken directly and there are plenty of guides out there on adapting monsters. I'm...

D&D 5E (2014) GMs of EN World: What player behavior annoys you the most?

I realise it's off topic, but I'd be very interested to hear more about how that conversion went.

D&D 5E (2014) Jack of All Trades: Works on Dispel Checks?

The Counterspell utility depends how you have spell identification work; if it's based on the character's class spell list that nerfs it a bit (there was a discussion of this on the board earlier in the week, I think). And technically I think Rogue (Swashbuckler) probably beats it on initiative...

    D&D 5E (2014) What would a 'real' D&D society look like?

I'd agree that level awareness would certainly be part of the issue. I'd also expect a sort of 'rumspringa' as a rite of passage for classed NPCs to acquire XP they need, and a professional career punctuated by sabbaticals for similar purposes. Assuming all party members get equal XP shares...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell - Do I know my foes' spell before I counter?

Related question: if a companion recognises the spell, can they alert the counterspeller? Or assist? (I'd say this is reasonable by fluff but potentially unfair by crunch). My players are bound to ask this eventually, but it occurred to me since my first character (a bard) had CS but rarely...
