Official D&D Sage Advice Compendium Updated

JC clearly points out that unless the bonus action has timing restrictions, you can take it any time you like on your turn. Between attacks in an attack action qualifies as any time in the turn, and thus I think it's quite reasonable to take a bonus action like Misty Step or Healing Word there...

Did you watch the Sage Advice video? https://youtu.be/ew1dc6VBHhA?t=304 Jeremy Crawford talks about the timing of bonus actions, as documented in the rules. Here's the section from the PHB that he's talking about (Chapter 9, under The Order of Combat and Your Turn). Emphasis added. The...

Official D&D Sage Advice Compendium Updated

FWIW, as Jeremy discussed in this week's Sage Advice video, neither Misty Step nor Healing Word have any kind of timing restrictions in their text and thus you can do them at any point on your turn (including the examples you give above). Shield Master, Two-Weapon Fighting etc do have triggers...

D&D 5E (2014) what version of the Ranger do you use?

I really hope the alternate class features Mike Mearls was working on become official, and look something very much like that, yeah.

D&D 5E (2014) what version of the Ranger do you use?

I'm in a very similar situation, currently playing a level 9 Gloom Stalker using PHB + XGTE without modifications and really enjoying it. I think I've used Natural Explorer exactly once so far, and Favored Enemy has come in handy a few times (we're playing Storm King's Thunder and nobody else...

4.33 Years in: What Now for 5E? (and have we reached "Peak Edition?")

Yeah I'm still skimming through DotMM, but so far I've been pretty disappointed in the lack of story. I was excited for an official product that went all the way to level 20 because I was looking forward to an actual campaign arc, not just a bunch of dungeon levels with enough XP to get there.

Mike Mearls Discusses Possible Alternate Class Features for the Ranger on Happy Fun Hour 11/20

That's why I switched to a Ranger after I got bored with my Paladin. Granted, I started at level 6 so I got to skip over some of the earlier pain points, but I'm actually quite happy with the Gloom Stalker subclass overall. I'll definitely be following the development of the alternate class...

Mike Mearls Discusses Possible Alternate Class Features for the Ranger on Happy Fun Hour 11/20

And I think it's worth keeping in mind that 3 of the bottom 4 are barely behind 4 through 8, and so overall the spread looks pretty reasonable. The Wizard (4th) is at 8.3%, and the Paladin (9th) is at 7.47%. That's really not a huge difference. The outliers really are just the Fighter, Rogue...

Mike Mearls Discusses Possible Alternate Class Features for the Ranger on Happy Fun Hour 11/20

Mike did talk about the Monk from a mechanics/combat perspective, he said they weren't satisfied with the damage output and might look at tweaking it. He also talked about the Sorcerer and how many people felt like the Sorcerer didn't have enough spells, and a simple +2 spells at first level...

Mike Mearls Discusses Possible Alternate Class Features for the Ranger on Happy Fun Hour 11/20

D&D Beyond has talked about classes and class/race combos in their &Beyond development update videos, the last one that I saw was a few months ago and showed Wood Elf Rangers as the second highest combo behind Human Fighter. They claim to look at things like adjusting hit points and other stuff...

Mike Mearls Discusses Possible Alternate Class Features for the Ranger on Happy Fun Hour 11/20

I don't think that was the intent of the tweet at all. https://twitter.com/JeremyECrawford/status/1023354199646527488 He is not calling people phantoms or illusions. He is saying that he wants to focus on "real desires held by a large number of players", not phantoms, which I read as...

Mike Mearls Discusses Possible Alternate Class Features for the Ranger on Happy Fun Hour 11/20

I always thought people were reading too much into Jeremy Crawford's recent tweets on the Revised Ranger, my reading of it was that the last survey was done a long time ago and they wanted to gauge the current level of satisfaction (or otherwise) before spending more time trying to fix the...

Ranger Beast Master: errata will add new features to your animal companion!

Yeah, RAW has crit success and failure for attack rolls only, it doesn't apply to saving throws or ability checks. It's one of the rules I see people get wrong very regularly.

Help, My players don’t know how to play.

Seconding this, don't play high-level D&D with people who don't know the rules or how their characters work. Might be worth just starting from level 1 again, and keep them around levels 3-5 as that tends to be a sweet spot of having access to your subclass and a few powerful spells/abilities...

Help, My players don’t know how to play.

This is why I really like D&D Beyond. I have the master tier subscription and share all the content with the rest of the group. It's really easy to create a character, and the site just does all the math for you. If you care about the details of why a certain number is what it is, you can...

Official D&D Errata Updated (Nov 2018)

A Pact of the Chain Warlock's Familiar is vastly superior as an exploration companion, as you can have invisible creatures that you can communicate with telepathically. How is a Beast Master's companion anywhere close to this useful? One might argue that an invisible familiar providing the...
