D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

I agree, they certainly won't try that again.

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

Yes it certainly is. I often wonder if it's even possible to create a default game for both playstyles. At best you're looking at one playstyle being mostly defined in a module.

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

Well I think SoD, aging, and Level Drain are great mechanics for a horror themed game like Ravenloft, which is anything but a dungeon crawl. Most of the focus on 2e wasn't based on mechanics it was based on DM adjudication and role playing. 2e Kits for example are mostly role playing based...

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

Actually, I agree that we can't be sure what the designers think, but we do have an indication from what the designers have said. IMO, many of the statements made by the designers (or lack thereof) have contributed to this problem. For example, in a Q&A, Rodney justified DoaM in a way that...

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

As a 2e fan, I don't agree with that at all. 2e was friendly to all different kinds of adventures. It supported everything from massive dungeon crawls to murder mystery horror modules (Ravenloft). As for simulation, I think 2e did a far better job at it than 3e. 2nd edition had rules for...

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

The category of "5e gamer" will be born with 5th edition regardless. It will be interesting to hear their opinion on previous editions. No doubt it will be shaped by their experience with 5th edition and the assumptions made by the designers.

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

Provided the statement isn't chauvinistic and/or discriminatory towards a particular edition and its players I agree.

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

Well folks are passionate about their editions. To be truly civil, we would do well to check our sensitivities and refrain from provocative statements that incite offense.

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

Yes, it has become a shouting match because people feel like their voice is falling on deaf ears. I have to admit I was really encouraged by D&D Next when they introduced optional resting rules. They started off the play-test on the right foot and captured my attention. I just hope that most...

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

Stating that the game might regress towards older editions is edition warring. The idea that 4e is an evolution is also offensive. IMO, 4e simply appeals to a different play-style.

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

The true soul of D&D has be shattered a few times over.

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

IMO, anyone who thinks that way isn't being reasonable. We can't possibly have a system for everyone without some mechanics being optional. Which mechanics are optional (in side bars) or not is irrelevant. Personalty, I don't care what the default game looks like. I don't need my play...

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

I agree, but I think that 4e is an overreaction to some of the problems 3.5e introduced. In my 2e games I use PC rules to build NPCs all the time. In fact, monsters are a pseudo class. When I ran a 4e game for a while I found myself spending a lot more time building encounters because much...

    D&D 5E (2014) Splitting your Move - The Move-Attack-Move Dynamic

I totally agree, lets not nerf the martial classes like 3e did. It's already hard enough to give them nice things.

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Campaign Themes

I find that it's helpful not to have one big campaign theme from levels 1-20. It can drag on far too long and the players can suffer from a lack of accomplishment. It's much more fun to have several shorter campaign themes that are loosely connected. In my experience a theme shouldn't last...

D&D 4E So all these wacky arguments are still about 4e, right?

That's a very good observation. In general, it's always a battle between the 4e (13th age) camp and the pre 4e /Pathfinder players. The positions are uncompromising and in some cases they are polar opposites. D&D Next must identify these play-style differences and speak to each player...

    D&D 5E (2014) Splitting your Move - The Move-Attack-Move Dynamic

I have players provoking on purpose all the time. Even with rules like that it still happens. Extra attacks in D&D Next do not get wasted when a kill is made on the first attack. The character can move to another target and complete his attacks.

D&D 5E (2014) Now that "damage on a miss" is most likely out of the picture, are you happy?

There are many situations in a D&D game in which the DM is left to decide what is reasonable. For many, the exact amount of space isn't required because they don't play on a grid with miniatures.

Well you might need to execute a withdrawal for that, but if you have a reach weapon and you're not threatened you should be allowed.
