IMHO, the reason why e-books haven't caught on, in addition to the buy-in price, is that they don't offer the same "text location awareness" that books do. Once the devices are the same size as text books, and more importantly figure out how to let someone flip around a book very very quickly...

Short and sweet. :) The rules are just guesses to begin with and guesses that are made based upon an unknown "average" group. I know the group that's going to face on-the-fly monsters. That makes a HUGE difference in the ease in determining challenge, IMO. joe b.

I know my player's ACs, HP, damage potentials, magic items and spells. Creating challenges around that information as I wish isn't really any different than doing it "by the book" - except I get to ignore all the mathy-bits that have to be tweaked to make it work the way I want it to to begin...

This is something I've heard a lot and I completely understand as a publisher (when you have to follow the "rules"), but something I find somewhat mystifying as a DM/Gamer. When I DM I just make stuff up. I decide what attack bonuses, damage, special attacks, skills etc that I want the creature...

Neverwinter Nights came out in mid-year 2002. The spike you're seeing is probably related to NW2. Compare the two and there's a fairly strong correlation, IMO. joe b.

But they probably know that they can kill it anyway. It's highly unlikely to be be more than +4 levels, and even that's really only a possibility if the party's at full health. Sure the above thinking is metagaming, but that's part of the game as well, IMO. :) joe b.
