Speeding up combat with Skirmishes & Set-Pieces

I haven't tried it in the same manner as you described, but yeah, I've tried a more streamlined approach to combat that both my players and I have immensely enjoyed. I call my version, "Combat Challenges" since it is more like a tweaked version of Skill Challenges, but where powers could (and...

Thinking of a new way to do rituals

My first thought was, why not use a single "token" in the ritual economy (versus three different ones)? If you wanted to differentiate between the three types of rituals, I would give them different point costs (like your primary one costs X points, while non-primary rituals cost X+2 tokens)...

    D&D 4E Pen and Paper 4e

This describes me pretty well too. At the table, I have my adventure printed out, players bring their character sheets and we use Rules Compendium for reference (but only occasionally). Monster stats are printed and HPs are tracked on paper. I've used pipe cleaners made into circles (lol, yeah...

    Kruthik Familiar

If the ritual is physically traumatic (which I could imagine, soul-binding rituals would be), I'd make Endurance a primary skill. I'd then replace it with Athletics as a secondary skill (which also fits when the PC is trying to restrain the Kruthik). How difficult is the SC btw? Level 1? 2?

D&D 4E How Are You Preparing to End Your 4E Campaign?

This is what I'm expecting as well. I'll be dabbling in the playtest, but whether my group converts to 5e will largely depend on compatible it is to 4e and our general interest. My Dark Sun campaign will be re-starting in February (yay!) and will probably run for a couple of years. I did...

Pathfinder 1E What can 5e Give us that Pathfinder doesn't

WotC would be crazy if they didn't offer some electronic support for 5e. Given the modular design of 5e, it makes sense for DDI to allow, for example, the Monster Builder and Character Builder to enable/disable options, so one can choose the level of complexity you want. Better yet, I'm hoping...

Why the love for the Edition Treadmill?

4e is the best version of D&D for me. I came late to the 4e party, and I'm glad I did (missing the brunt of the Edition Wars and some early rule changes). I'm getting the sense though that the ire of 4e critics are mainly due to (1) the marketing snafus when rolling out 4e and (2) the game...

    Anyone loveAoOs/OAs?

This, plus adding AoO as a class feature or feat for fighters and other defenders, would make a nice default option.

    Anyone loveAoOs/OAs?

I like them but as optional rules.

    D&D 4E What's the point of playing 4e now?

Mike Mearls is quoted with saying that WotC plans to continue offering CB/MB for 4e support here: The Escapist : Speak Your Mind in the Next Version of Dungeons & Dragons. I'd also check the D&D 5e Info above that tracks 5e's impact on 4e (there's not much there besides this article).

Pathfinder 1E What can 5e Give us that Pathfinder doesn't

I'm thinking that for 5e, we'd have to ask "at what level" would 5e be compatible with 4e, referring to the modular approach 5e may be taking. Hopefully (for me), the answer is "at some level". I doubt 5e would be compatible at its most basic level; 4e is too complex for that. But perhaps at...

    D&D 4E Things I Learned From 4e

My lessons based in part from KM's list: * I don't care about the Encounter, I care about the Adventure: I think I'm missing some nuance here. I see Adventures consisting of many encounters. What am I missing? * I want to do more than fight things. 5e should develop non-combat activities but...

    D&D 4E 4E/5E Transition issues

Hmm, I hope we all keep gideonpepys OP in perspective. I didn't get a sense that he's portraying a "doom and gloom" scenario unlike what is often (unfortunately) seen in 5e threads. But maybe I'm reading things wrong. Anyway, to clarify my position here, I wouldn't go so far to say that WotC's...

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

This is what brought me back to D&D. It's good to be back. W00t! And, hail to the original 4e fanboi! ;)

    New Idea for Overaching Plot

Don't have much time to respond, but I think this is a great idea. It would be interesting for example, if Glasya and her Devil-Angels attacked Asmodeus for control of the Nine Hells. This might put him in a position asking for the PC's help (you know, the devil you know is better than the devil...

    D&D 4E 4E/5E Transition issues

I do think gideonpapys has a valid point, though. I think it's reasonable to believe that 4e "users" (players and GMs) will take the presence of electronic tools (or lack thereof) into consideration when deciding whether to continue with 4e or start all together. It certainly was true in my...

    D&D 4E 4E/5E Transition issues

I've purposely avoided participating in 5e threads to avoid the rampant (and unhelpful) speculation inherent in them. But the OP raises some good points which, if I were WotC, I'd consider as they are concerns from their customers. It would be nice, once WotC has their ducks in a row, to be...

What Do You Think of These Encounters?

Wow! That's a great idea. Looking at it now (L8 Lurker), I'd combine a bit of Wraith with the Trap Haunt. I'd start with the Trap Haunt stats (adjusting for level of course or reducing to equal con but making it Elite). But I do like Wraith's shadowglide (the invisible and teleport) but not...

What Do You Think of These Encounters?

I've looked up Wraith on the Compendium, a L5 Lurker. For powers, I see insubstantial but not regen or weaken. Am I missing something? Assuming this is the correct Wraith stats, does the party have anyone who does radiant or force damage? Or turn undead? I like knowing these things to gauge...

    Suggestions for a 2 player game (1DM,1Player)

Modifying Encounters: To follow up on Zaran's comment, I'm looking at pages 56-57 of the DMG. Your encounter budget = # of PCs/NPCs in party * XP value of monsters of the encounter's level. A typical encounter ends up with 1 standard monster for each party member, or you "trade in" 1 standard...
