    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

My response is that you can always dumb down a class and play it simply. If you build a class with mechanical depth, Autoattack and not engaging with feats or resources is still an option. But the reverse is not true. If you just rolled all the battlemaster fighter features in to the base...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

Kind of a bizarre take that I've never seen anywhere else. And it has the same alternative explanation: people are discouraged from playing fighters because the rules are lacking and they need to dip magical feats/races/subclasses to enable mechanically engaging gameplay.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

I guess we fundamentally disagree on this point. I haven't interviewed every single DnD player so I can't be sure, but I think there's a ton of evidence that people DO want it. My personal experience is that players are deterred from playing the non-magical fighters because the gameplay loop is...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

Agreed, with only 6 maneuvers per rest, giving up ANY to non-combat really hurts. In OneDnD, the updated battlemaster at lv15 gets a 'free' maneuver once per turn, which is AMAZING to pick up the non-combat maneuvers. Unfortunately, it comes at lv15, beyond what most people will play to.

Yeah, Rune Knight does enable this build better with all its advantages. But a significant part is that you've enabled the build with stat allocation and feats. Advantage multiplies with your other build decisions to make it worthwhile: getting advantage on a DC20 check with +7 is significantly...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

Adding maneuvers to all fighters / all martials is probably the most requested or home-brewed suggestion for the game. Most of the "5e successor" games or asdons implement it: eg Levelup advanced 5e, PF2E, DC20. And in the OneDnD playtests, the Monk, Rogue and Barbarian have all been given more...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

The build undoubtedly achieves what it sets out to do: being a skill monkey. I think its just a mistake though to say that because this build can do skills, that fighters in general are good at skills, or other fighter builds are wrong, or that this build is significantly better at skills than...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

I think what you're demonstrating with this character is that: a) If you put 4 feats in to Skill improvement instead of anything else, you'll be good at the skills pillar of the game. You could pick any other class, pick up the same Feats (sans 1 for fighter) and be in nearly the same boat. I...
