D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

I do get it though, I just have never had a reason to ever allow them in a game. I allowed them in Hoard of the Dragon Queen. Once. Until the Dragonborn paladin asked me if he would be okay with destroying black dragon eggs. So we tried to refer to the Dragonborn fluff, which uhhhhhhhh...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dex-based greatsword?

I don't know why some people don't get that they have to pay for versatility. My gnoll ranger uses a halberd two handed, but is dex based for AC. He has a 16 dex and 14 str. It's not the best, but if it's important to the character concept, sometimes you give stuff up. If Strength was your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Questions regarding a Noble Bard

I played a high elf noble bard character, it works really well. Dump the musical instrument gimmick though, there's really no support for it in this version of the game. Perform can be used for politics and oration.

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

Interesting how dragonborn are a common example in this thread.

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

Interesting replies. I tend to run only established settings and as such, try to stick to any limitations or restrictions that setting might infer. So far, Dragonborn haven't been allowed in any 5e games that I've run, simply because other than 4e's Nentir Vale, their fluff has been incredibly...

    SWORD COAST LEGENDS Trailer

Yeah, I did find it really peculiar that this game literally came out of nowhere. What you're saying makes a lot of sense. The problem is that even on its own merit, it does everything extremely poorly. The game itself isn't much fun if you've played any MMO, Diablo, Baldur's Gate, NWN, or...

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

At our table, when we alter/remove races and classes for a specific world setting, we have a player that complains that everything isn't available, and doesn't like restrictions. I am not a fan of shoehorning something in just because a player wants to play it, and neither is the other DM at...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: Is it broken?

I don't see why getting sneak attack damage a maximum of twice per round is a big deal. You can only use it on your turn once, and once if there is an opportunity attack to be made and you haven't spent your reaction. This never changes, no matter how many attacks you get when you take the...

    Ran MERP, Comedy ensued

So, last night while our D&D5 Dragonlance game was off for a week (missing a player), I ran a game of MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing) module Bree and the Barrow Downs The characters were an orc animist, troll warrior, dwarf ranger, and Rohirrim bard. They explored the barrow downs and fought...

Selfish playstyles and other newer issues with the game

That wasn't meant literally, it was a metaphor for sticking together.

Selfish playstyles and other newer issues with the game

How do I deal with players like this? Kick them out? On the other side of the coin, what if I'm stuck at a table (or worse, a table at a con) with one of these people? The dividing line, at least in my experiences, has been between those who want to use their abilities creatively, and those...

Selfish playstyles and other newer issues with the game

I'm finding the opposite, it seems to be more with players who had exposure to previous editions. The younger folks I've gamed with don't seem to have any expectations. I've actually seen several friends I've known for 10 or 20 years move to this type of play style, and if they are regular...

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you buy a Southlands Campign Setting for 5e?

We already have Southlands Heroes (where are the promised monsters? they should have been here by now?), what about the campaign setting? Would you buy it if it was converted? I know I would.

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss - Madness! Insanity! What Works/Doesn't? What Was Hilarious/Tragic?

Hilarious? The whole party abusing Stool, 'cause that's what happened.

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

These, just like multi-classing, are not allowed at any games I run. Why? Because that's where the brokenness combos live, and character concepts get thrown out the window. I don't look forward to playing at tables that use these rules.

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

CRs are a lot more accurate at lower levels simply because less variables. That being said, I don't care about abilities of anything at character level 15+. At that point I hope I have armies at my disposal and my character doesn't have to do the work themselves.
