D&D 5E (2014) No update to Basic today?

Well, it detects as magic, so I think we can rule out the masterwork hotdog. Cheers! Kinak

D&D 5E (2014) 60+ monsters and 20+ spell in free official Hoard of the Dragon Queen supplement

True, people will have a chance to get used to it over time. But even the acolyte has... *checks list* *compares with Basic Rules* Sanctuary and the priest has... *checks Basic Rules again* also has Spiritual Weapon as bonus actions, along with its explicit bonus action. And Spiritual Weapon...

D&D 5E (2014) 60+ monsters and 20+ spell in free official Hoard of the Dragon Queen supplement

This is a really nice PDF. I feel like it gives a good look at the type of monsters we can expect from 5e. Which is nice. I'd really been looking forward to digging into the monsters. A couple of notes: Didn't they change the kobold advantage on swarming? I remember that being a mess in the...

D&D 5E (2014) No update to Basic today?

Yeah, the hotdog treasure and monsters do a good job covering for the Basic update. There's a lot of stuff in there, plenty of it low level. There are a couple classics missing, but we've got most of Keep on the Borderlands in there. Cheers! Kinak

D&D 5E (2014) Quick question about Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Yeah, my best suggestion without file manipulation would be: print out the PDF, cut out the monsters you need and slip them in the correct places in the adventure book. Cheers! Kinak

D&D 5E (2014) Quick question about Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Most encounters reference the MM (or the free doc Xodis linked). The rest point to Appendix B. Cheers! Kinak

    D&D 5E (2014) First Legendary Monster!

There's a decent chance I misread it. I'm pretty used to Worldbreakers, so I might be tying the legendary and lair together too closely. Cheers! Kinak

    D&D 5E (2014) First Legendary Monster!

Mmmm, hot dogs. Yeah, it's definitely possible they'll add some actions outside the stat blocks. I prefer to have my stat blocks all together, but I guess that would be in line with how they're handling spells. Cheers! Kinak

    D&D 5E (2014) First Legendary Monster!

Very consistent mechanic for these (three saves a day and three legendary actions a turn), so presumably that's what they settled on. The basic mechanic is fairly reasonable, pushing back a bit against the action economy advantages a party of PCs has. It's probably not coincidental that one...

D&D 5E (2014) No update to Basic today?

I do believe the plan is to update the PDF today, but plans have a way of falling through when you're working on at least two major products and getting ready for a convention halfway across the country. My suggestion would be, check a few times and be pleasantly surprised if it shows up :)...

D&D 5E (2014) What monster are you hoping to see in the 5B update?

I'd like to see a legendary creature (or template), mostly so we can see if their good ideas shine through in implementation. If we need to choose a specific monster, I'd go with giant rats, actually. Not because I need ROUSs, but because I want to see how close they are to the playtest...

D&D 5E (2014) Still no information on WotC's digital plans

I absolutely agree on the reasoning, but I'm okay with however far they veer in the other direction. I'm a big fan of underpromising and overdelivering. I'm also curious to see what happens with Dungeon and Dragon, though. I'll take an announcement whenever they're sure. Cheers! Kinak

Pathfinder 1E Is there a magic item that would negate or lower the penalties for using over-sized weapons?

There isn't one as written, no. Paizo's been very reluctant to add this because the damage ramps up pretty quickly. Even in 3.5, using a two-handed weapon larger than your size required an epic (level 21+) feat. Math-wise, you're looking at probably +4.5 damage per hit (multiplied by crits)...

D&D 5E (2014) Review of New Players Handbook Posted at Acts of Geek...

The condition sketches are really cute. I also like this: "an appendix detailing the many creatures/monsters that a PC may find themselves needing the stats for." Off-loading PC abilities into the monster books never sat well with me. Cheers! Kinak

    17 Planar Species: A Reimagining

Looks good! Yeah, definitely some similarity to draugr. I was more going for one mouth, rather than several. Like this guy. But, yeah, wouldn't want any mix-ups with abominations. I'd shoot more for "fear of insanity" than "fear of the unknown." Doing Einherjar, I'd probably split them up by...

    17 Planar Species: A Reimagining

Acheron I think with Acheron, you really need a strong martial theme. Rank-based hierarchies are already major features of the modrons and baatezu, so we need to go a bit further than that. It's common enough for petitions to be killed in the wars on Acheron, but what about the ones who are...

    Pathfinder 1E poor party composition

Why are we ruling out dropping the CR? I mean, I know you want to run epic encounters, but that's a question of tone and setup, not CR. If your players are really good optimizers, you'll end up running CR+4 encounters regularly to make them sweat. If you'd do that, why wouldn't you ease the CR...

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 8/4/14: Here Comes the Player's Handbook

DDI is also available here: http://dnd.wizards.com/digital_tools Nobody knows how long it'll last, but they haven't officially stopped support (just stopped adding new content). Cheers! Kinak

D&D 5E (2014) XP Progression in Lost Mine of Phandelver [SPOLIERS!]

Exactly. Reward the behavior you want to see. Want them to advance the plot? Story-based XP. Want roleplaying? Give the group RP rewards (not individual rewards, that's a mess). Want them to kill all the things? Monster XP. As Uller mentioned, Adventure paths are very good for leveling up (or...
