D&D General 2025 Rakshasa has a great stat block

One of my players was really worried that monks couldn't damage helmed horrors. Because monks no longer have magical fists, they have force fists! (2014 helmed horrors are immune to force damage). 2024 helmed horrors? No more immunity to force! (Or even resistance - they still have necrotic and...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

While the creation of yugoloths was definitely Gygax filling in gaps in the alignment chart - he had demons for Chaotic Evil and devils for Lawful Evil, and needed a Neutral Evil fiend, he didn't call them yugoloths. He called them "Daemons". Which has the slight problem of being pronounced...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

The wacky thing is they didn't go pure alphabetical! See... Cultists, for instance, that get a group description and then have Cultist, Cultist Fanatic, Death Cultist, etc...

D&D General 2025 Rakshasa has a great stat block

I pity the poor fools who face the new Rakshasa! Over double the 2014 hit points. A multiattack that means they're potentially hitting three times with a curse that has one of the most fearful lines of text in any D&D rulebook: "the target gains no benefit from finishing a Short or Long Rest."...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

It's more noticeable with yugoloths because the term means nothing outside of D&D. A demon has real mythological meaning outside of the game and that does a lot of heavy lifting. Yugoloths don't get that advantage.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

Betcha it doesn't even get close to fleshing most of it out.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

As I was examining the 2025 Monster Manual (in alphabetical order), I came across the entry for the Mezzoloth. "Mezzoloths are insectile yugoloths that seek power and souls in the service of fiendish lords. These greedy, violent yugoloths are more direct than most of their scheming brethren...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

There is overlap, but honestly - if you become a computer gamer, it will forever dominate your destiny... ...sorry, got sidetracked. :) Lots of computer gamers also play D&D, but those ones don't translate to extra sales of D&D, since they're already buying the game! So, you have to hit...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I have a sneaking suspicion that "One D&D" was also abandoned during the development process - I sort of suspect because a lot of the audience really didn't like that name.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

They have a few games in development. One is helmed by ex-Bioware staff and is under the banner of Wizards of the Coast - that one's called "Exodus". (Voice acting include Matthew McConaughey). It got revealed at the Game Awards, though the studio was founded in April 2019. "(This new sci-fi...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Video games have grown so much. But the challenges in making profitable ones are very, very real - and you can lose so much money on them!

#1 advantage any game has is having a GM who loves running the game and whose players love their work!

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Greyhawk very much becomes what you make it - even the Greyhawk community has wildly divergent takes on what is released after 1985! It's been my main setting for running adventures in since 2000, and though I've drawn inspiration from published material, it's very much my own take these days...

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

Is Chaosium massive in Japan? Wow - I had no idea! (I've really fallen out of paying attention to Chaosium post-lockdown, alas!) Yeah, it was sort of hard to judge how big FFG was based only on their RPG content. But that company isn't what it used to be - thank you so much, Asmodee/Embracer...

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

Post PF2, I don't think Paizo are as close as they once were. I sort of wonder if there's another company who is now #2 instead of Paizo in the TTRPG field.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Planescape is helped by the Dungeoncraft DDAL adventures providing content. Looks like there were 3 Planescape products released in January, all DC adventures. Four Spelljammer products in January! (I think, the tagging is odd on this one). Two Ravenloft. (Only 2? Weird). No Eberron! January...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Mike has mentioned that the number of products on the DMs Guild overall has been dropping off. (Seriously, we're in a VERY flooded market at present). It's still a bit early for a LOT of Greyhawk products, but even so - I don't know how many there will be. Just give me a few quality ones and...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

One of the tricky things about the analysis of how D&D is going is that we're also in a particularly bad time of the economy. And things aren't getting easier - I have no idea how the Cosmere/Sanderson kickstarter will be affected by the tariffs, but I can't imagine that they'll make the job of...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

There were four Greyhawk products in January. A mere four. I'm reading through them at the moment - and the first couple weren't good.
