    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 - Do magic weapons bypass resistance now?

Magic weapons give a +1 to hit and damage. That helps you! But against all monsters. Very few monsters have resistance or immunity to normal weapons now.

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

It isn't in 2024, and we know there are conversion issues. :) However, in the interests of creating a ruling: Full text of Boon of High Magic: "You gain one 9th-level spell slot, provided that you already have one." (Note that a player can't choose this - it can only be given by a DM, per the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Stealth Errata

One of the assumptions of 5E hiding that you may not be aware you're making: Does being "hidden" mean the opponent can't see you, or the opponent has lost track of where you are? In some versions of D&D, it's possible to be invisible, but you're making enough noise, etc. that the opponents...

    D&D 5E (2024) Stealth Errata

Someone asked me why I cared, and I can say that when you organise public play every week in a store, you really don't want core rules to be confusing.

    D&D 5E (2024) Stealth Errata

I wish they were so clear. :) Because of how they've broken up the rules, what was grouped together in 2014 got split apart in 2024. The DM decides part is in Chapter 1. All the actual details of the hide action (which exclude that pesky little detail) are in the Rules Glossary. It's very...

    D&D 5E (2024) Stealth Errata

Their success was in clearly stating the requirements to become hidden using the Hide action. Everything else has been an unmitigated disaster, making hiding actually less clear than it was before! (And ruining the invisibility spell to boot).

    D&D 5E (2024) Stealth Errata

It doesn't help, sadly. There are several areas where the rules are sadly deficient: * the rules are very vague about what "an enemy finds" you means. If I'm hidden, can I walk around in the open and can't be found until an enemy actually takes the Search action? It sounds ridiculous, but...

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

One of the #1 rules in rules interpretation is don't come up with examples that don't exist. :) Showing the rules break under hypothetical situations isn't that useful.

D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

You don't prepare for slots. :) The 2024 text says "You determine what spells you can prepare for each class individually, as if you were a single-classed member of that class. If you are a level 4 Ranger / level 3 Sorcerer, for example, you can prepare five level 1 Ranger spells, and you can...

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

The 2014 rules explictly cover this. They say monsters are normally looking around in combat, but the DM can make an exception. "In combat, most creatures stay alert for signs of danger all around, so if you come out of hiding and approach a creature, it usually sees you. However, under certain...

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

Normally, the attack will stop the invisible condition, as written in the Hide action. So, from behind 3/4 cover, you make a ranged attack, and it ends. With this, as long as you end up behind 3/4 or total cover, it doesn't end. (But if you're just completely in darkness and they can't see you...

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

Unfortunately, the 2024 rules don't actually say that. And it's something that can be very confusing for those of us familiar with other rulesets (like 3E or PF2).

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

No. It's much easier for you to just compare the original text against mine. Some is changed, some is added, some is deleted.

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

That is a reason I added that "DM can keep the condition going" clause. That one HAS to come down to DM judgement, otherwise it's run 30 feet across a plain field while the opponent is looking at you!

WotC Chris Cao has left WotC

One of the really interesting things is the rarity of mythics is the same as the old rare cards. In the original set, there was a Mox Jet every 121 boosters. There was also a Thoughtlace ever 121 boosters. In recent sets, there is a specific mythic rare (e.g. Tarmogoyf) every 121 boosters...

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

A few people were wondering if I'd ever come up with revised Hiding rules for D&D 2024. I haven't, not really. Instead, I've reframed the rules to better fit what I think the designer intention is. However, the main changes I made to the wording are as follows: ### Hide [Action] With the...

Cannibalized. :) I would not be surprised if covid & lockdowns pushed a lot of people towards MTG Arena as well. I do know that all my MTG play is now on Arena. (Yikes - is it really 31 years since I first played? Now been 5 years since I bought physical cards - and I have a substantial...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

Good read-aloud text makes running adventures much, much easier. There are lots of examples of bad read-aloud text. But I've seen many examples of no read-aloud text that are dismal to run. Not everyone is good at improvising descriptions. In general, you can use longer read-aloud text to...
