    D&D 5E (2024) DMG adventure design advice - a bit contradictory?

It's not easier for you. I'm having a lot of fun running Eve of Ruin (much to my surprise), and I do minimal preparation for each session. (Apparently a LOT of experience running adventures helps me run these). Cheers, Merric

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon US book sales rank.

You are old. You get to learn about how old you are when you go back to events in your life and realise your co-workers weren't born then. Things like the Lord of the Rings films. Cheers, Merric

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

Mork Borg is the most prominent example to me of feeling very Old School whilst not being D&D. Cheers, Merric

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

One of the troubles with "Old School campaigns lasted a long time" is that, for the vast majority, they didn't. A very few continued. Most ended - and didn't even last a year. The more modern design of faster levelling (which is now 24 years old - yikes!) was in large part due to that...

D&D General The Greyhawk Pantheon: How Greyhawk Approaches Deities (& Demigods)

Like many things, the true impact of the deities is how they get used - and in the RPG sphere, especially in official products. So, strangely enough, the very first Greyhawk deity to appear... is the Elder Elemental God! Closely followed by Lolth! :) (Of course, there are almost no details...

D&D 5E (2024) Greyhawk- New Map, Discussion of Changes

Quite possibly... but Wizards really has it in for Bandits! The Bandit Kingdoms have been referred to internally as the "Combination of Free Lords" - LGG25. So on that theory you'd expect it to be renamed as well. :) Meanwhile, the orc horde that devastated Phandalin has become... bandits...

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG adventure design advice - a bit contradictory?

Winging it is something I do a lot... but relies on years of preparation and experience in how D&D adventures and encounters work, and what "fits" the game and the World of Greyhawk in particular. Improvisation is a skill! Cheers, Merric

D&D General Forgive my blasphemy: downplaying the Grayhawk gods

I'd keep Iuz (since he's on the map!), St Cuthbert, his devout foe, and Zagyg. After that, put in new deities or not as you please. I regularly ignore a lot of the Greyhawk pantheon, concentrating on the gods I like. (Currently Xan Yae and St Cuthbert). I believe in the original games, the...

D&D General Vecna, Eve of Ruin - play reports.

You find yourself in Evernight... You need to get out of here. The adventure immediately leads you to a marketplace, where the first person you talk to has exactly the information you need. You go to the place they mention, kill a couple of monsters, and escape. It feels very much like "We...

D&D General Vecna, Eve of Ruin - play reports.

I'm dreadfully behind with session reports (it's a lot harder in winter, which it is at the moment - also busy with work). And I don't have time now! But just for where we are at present: We started our exploration of the Death House (the Ravenloft chapter) today. We had a lot of fun. I could...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #3: "New Paladin"

Ten minutes is weird, because it's FAR longer than most combats in 5E (especially in Wizards adventures, where 3 rounds often is long). But it's not enough to accommodate exploration. So, it means the players rush from one room to the next without checking anything because otherwise their...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #3: "New Paladin"

Here's one change that I actually think is underwhelming: Oath of Devotion has "sacred weapon" and similar lasting 10 minutes rather than 1. However, I'm old school. 10 minutes is the length of a combat or an exploration turn, so it doesn't actually extend it enough! (It only works if you rush...

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG adventure design advice - a bit contradictory?

Adventures need structure. There are a lot of potential structures. And within those structures are encounters and situations. Having a goal is not a bad thing.

D&D General Changing Order of Character Creation, from 1e to 2024

B/X was such a clean, elegant system (and well explained) - everything AD&D was not. But AD&D just had lots more interesting stuff. And Race/Class was central to it. Cheers, Merric
