D&D General Sandbox style: Rumors say a +1 sword is in a cave nearby. Go get it?

Although I agree that it's really wonderful to have the "in-game" fiction be far more evocative than just a "+1 sword", this discussion does remind me of this classic piece of text from an 1979 AD&D adventure: "Stop before you pick me up. I confer the following powers upon my wearer...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is no one talking about THE BOOK OF MANY THINGS?

It is a book that is strangely limited by its subject matter. As I was reading it, I was going "this is great!" a lot, but the more I read, the more I thought "I just wish they weren't shoehorning everything to fit with the Deck of Many Things". By the end, I felt it had missed the mark...

Project Sigil 90% Of D&D’s Project Sigil Team Laid Off

I'd forgotten that! (It's max 17 Wisdom for the halfling, in fact - a holdover from 1E). The AD&D half-orc could have a max wisdom of 14! There is a lot of complexity in AD&D. B/X? Not as much. BECMI? Weapon Mastery would like a word... :) Cheers!

D&D General How the heck do you fight a medieval war in winter?

It's worth nothing that many northern European wars take place in late summer and then proceed well into autumn (and beyond). Henry V's first expedition into France started August 12 (late summer), then captured Harfleur September 22 (past the equinox into autumn), then fought Agincourt on...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

I think there are PLENTY of reasons of why you'd want a lighter or heavier system than 5E. Pathfinder is a thing, after all.

Project Sigil 90% Of D&D’s Project Sigil Team Laid Off

Indeed. Steam numbers for Talespire are peaking at 1000 each week - at launch it reached a peak of 1400 players. Those are not great numbers. It's not growing, though it's surprisingly stable looking over the figures, and it's better than Suicide Squad, but it's certainly not setting the world...

Was this really a big Unreal Engine product? Split Fiction had a team of 80 people. (Unreal Engine 5). Most likely it'll be nominated for Game of the Year.

250 people sounds crazy big for this project. Honestly: I don't believe it.

Project Sigil 90% Of D&D’s Project Sigil Team Laid Off

It laid off six people. Six. Warner Games shuttered Player First Games AFTER the quick death of MultiVersus. (It launched in beta to great acclaim, and then in a baffling decision they closed it down for almost a year. When it came back, no-one cared, and it never regained a player base. It's...

Many people told Gary Gygax that D&D would have low interest. (e.g. Avalon Hill).

I'm going to be utterly astonished if it stays around - despite what Andy says. I hope he finds a new job soon! He's too talented to not be part of the industry.

My take is that Project Sigil is dead. They saw the interest in it - and it was LOW. (See Concord from last year). I'm not actually mad at Wizards for this. Which is odd - I'm annoyed at them about enough other things. But stuff like this, which is actually pretty innovative, is also pretty...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

Some of the things OSR people are reacting against... are quite visible in actual Old School products. "Modern" D&D didn't come from nowhere - and I can argue that a lot of the story-driven play that it typical of 5E Wizards adventures has its seeds in Gygax's Giant/Drow adventures. Some of it...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

Funny how you read it as the DM tracking ammunition... :) It's a legitimate reading, though my intention was asking about you as a player. (Shows how some of us are very much forever DMs!)

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

Rations is a really interesting one because there's a relatively low-level spell (create food and water) that makes them not so important. (Or goodberry, I guess). Meanwhile, is there any spell that creates arrows? ;)
