D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

The funny thing for me was my first 20 level 5e campaign WAS a “find the Rod of seven parts” plot. Well, the second half, after Xan Yae and St Cuthbert manifested near Veluna and starting leading armies… and they had to be stopped… …not that I’d planned that at the start. Things snowballed...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Yeah. That’s a very strong indication of how it is to get a singular story that keeps people’s attention over 20 levels. Also: if I don’t like this adventure concept after a couple of instalments, why should I buy the rest of the parts? (Lots of Paizo APs I don’t like the theme that much!)...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

Well, it was pre-covid now, so that puts it in the distantly-remembered past! It's one of the adventures I haven't run, so I can't really speak to it. (It's something I'd use more piecemeal as part of a larger Waterdeep campaign rather than just as a monolithic 5-20 dungeoncrawl, since it...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

The pacing of Wizards adventures - especially the newer ones - is often quite fast. They're designed with limited space, but with target levels for each chapter. And then you can get through a chapter in 4 hours in many cases, since there isn't more material. I'm sure some groups will expand on...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

It's called Vecna: Eve of Ruin. Levels 10-20. Level 5-20? That's Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage. It's very funny to see how many people are running Eve of Ruin in my circles - mostly hollowing it out and putting in their own material!

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

People "just" aren't used to it. They find the levels they're happy running at. They have their campaigns end early. They don't have stories to tell that need higher levels. Me? I saw the H1-4 AD&D Bloodstone Pass adventures as a teenager and took them as a goal. Still haven't run them! But I...

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

I had the idea of a "mob" which was the scrum of melee. There's a reference in the 1E DMG to randomly selecting targets once in melee, so we would occasionally do that. Looking back, it was very unstructured. Cheers, Merric

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

One point worth considering from the post you reply to refers to "the grid" rather than minis in particular - which I don't think Chainmail or OD&D reference at all. Chainmail was being played as a traditional wargame with miniatures - so measuring tape and rulers, but not a grid. If anyone...

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

Well, have a look at the cover of Original D&D. "Rules for fantastic Medieval Wargames Campaigns Playable with Paper and Pencil and Miniature Figures". Looks like Minatures are pretty prominently mentioned there, right? There's not all that much mentioned in the rules for OD&D, but then -...

D&D 5E (2014) What could 5E do to make wealth worthwhile?

If your way to make wealth matter is to have living expenses, taxes, etc... you've failed. That's just a way of taking away wealth. If you give the players money, then take it away, you aren't doing anything interesting. To make wealth matter, you need several things the players can spend it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Invisible+Gaseous Form+Stealth---How would you run it?

Rules Answer 1: Yes. My Answer 1: Yes. Rules Answer 2: He's invisible and looking at the 2014 condition, heavily obscured. The 2014 rules are very problematic when it comes to detecting people with other senses. People can't detect him at all with sight - that is, autofail Perception checks -...

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

Yeah, 3D printing has REALLY changed things. I think its biggest impact might actually be terrain!

    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

At present, my current Greyhawk 5E campaign is at 17th level after 2.5 years of fortnightly play. My previous Greyhawk 5E campaign reached 20th level. The campaign before that was 10th level, and everyone was surprised when I ended it. The campaign before that was 4E, and it reached 30th level...

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

I think they were also a LOT more hard to get hold of (and paint) back in the day. D&D painted plastic minis made a big difference when they arrived 22 years ago, and youtube painting tutorials also opened up the world to a lot of people. (The cost of the Wizkids minis now is absolutely...

D&D General What does "This adventure is for mid-level adventurers" mean to you?

Just doing one of my infrequent updates of my adventure database, and I found this advertising text: "This one-shot adventure is perfect for a session of thrilling exploration, combat, and roleplay for mid-level adventurers." And it really made me wonder what they intended the adventure for...

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

One of the bigger splits in the D&D community is about whether or not to use miniatures. And they have a definitely effect on how the rules are written. So, just for fun - where's your preference? Running D&D with miniatures (or VTT tokens, etc.) or using Theatre of the Mind and just describing...

D&D 5E (2024) Magic Missile is saved! Hooray!

The ruling was at one time that all the damage was taken simultaneously, so it's one save vs. the total damage. As opposed to being hit with scorching rays, where the attack rolls are made sequentially. No idea what it is currently!
