    Vulnerabilities: an underutilized mechanism?

None. My PCs have no many ways to survive it is not funny (actions points, of course, plus luck points for every session [these let you have re-rolls] and fate points [one per level, can be used to avoid death]).

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

This really has been a great thread. Thanks, Piratecat. I particularly appreciate the summary of your thoughts you gave yesterday: some good advice there. He was the author of The World of Synnibarr but it was published under a pseudonym.

    Vulnerabilities: an underutilized mechanism?

I do like part of that idea: but I would also, IMC (thus IMO and YMMV), not have that hellhound take damage from the fire-based attack.

    Vulnerabilities: an underutilized mechanism?

I rebuild practically all my monsters in the Monster Builder before use and adding vulnerabilities and increasing resistances is one of the first things I do. I particularly like adding a vulnerability to cold to reptilian creatures such as yuan-ti. Rather than taking more damage, the yuan-ti...

    Dungeon #173: Dungeoncraft 22 - Dungeon Dressing

I think Dungeon Delve II is more or less confirmed (not officially, per se, but enough unofficial posts to suggest it's a definite) but I got the impression, and I may be wrong, that he was talking about building a much larger map from dungeon tiles. Maybe it's for an adventures in the HS series...

    Rebuild 1E...

I would keep it really simple: - AC goes up; - get rid of different weapon damage based on size; - three saving throw categories and give thieves the best saves vs anything relating to dodging out of the way rather than the worst; and - ditch weapon restrictions (but retain proficiencies)...

    27th level Monster Conversions

Hi the Jester, I'm thinking about converting the deepspawn. I have no real need for it right now but maybe I will attempt it shortly just to see how it turns out. I wondering: - why did you choose 27th level? - do you see it as a controller or lurker or something else? - what do you plan to...

    mapping before game... (DM)

Skeleton Key games publishes a lot of map tiles that you buy as PDF files and then print out. You can also manage the sets, and build maps from the tiles, by using the tile organiser which has a free demo version at: Tile Mapper You can buy the full version on RPGNow which gives you access to...

    D&D 4E Running Commentary on Rel's 4e Campaign (Complete 8/2/10)

I just wanted to say, once again, what a great thread. I'm really enjoying the story developments and am challenged to improve my own.

    What motivates a primordial?

I'm trying to brainstorm some ideas in relation to Karshimis, a primordial mentioned in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide. The FRCG notes that he/it ruled a land of genasi on the other FR world before the Spellplague causes parts of the two worlds to merge. For me, I see the primordials as...

    Solo Adventure Scenario in Dungeon!

I loved the Fabled Lands books by Dave Morris much more. Your character had six traits (combat, thievery, sanctity et al) as well as defence (armour class) and wounds (hit points). You could own a ship and do trading (very cool) as well as a townhouse where you could store things. There were...

    Solo Adventure Scenario in Dungeon!

And by some strange coincidence, this week I managed to find the six published copies of the Fabled Lands gamebooks from 1995 by Dave Morris and some other bloke. These are the absolute gold standard of gamebooks (you can have a ship and trade, you have six different abilities/skills, you can...

Quag the Viscid, awakened gelatinous cube cleric of Ghaunadaur

Guys, firstly thanks very much for your feedback. I wanted to give Quag a minor action attack and the gelatinous cube's engulf ability seemed like a good candidate. While it does seem powerful at face value, it can only affect adjacent opponents. What do you both think about making it minor...

    How do the Djinn live?

What about using the stereotypes of the Ottoman Empire at its height for inspiration? The djinn would be wealthy and educated. Much of their time would be spent telling stories, listening to music, bathing, "hareming" (I know that's not a word), practising swordplay, creating works of art...

    How Complex Should D&D Be?

I want 4E's electronic tools for 3.5E. Complexity is about managing that complexity and WotC never delivered the promised electronic tools to manage the complexity of 3.5E, something that they have subsequently demonstrated that they can do with 4E.
