What Are The Greatest Ever D&D Books For Inspiring Adventures?

Second Edition's Faiths & Avatars for the Forgotten Realms was not only the book that brought me back to D&D and RPGs after many years, it has inspired every campaign since then across three editions.

    Dungeon....where did you go?

I'm torn between complaining about the continuing paucity of content... and the fact that we have once again seen a great 4E adventure. Where was Chris Perkins when the utter rubbish that was the majority of the H1-3/P1-3/E1-3 and Scales of War adventure paths was being produced?

    Adventures You'd Like Produced

At the risk of being branded unoriginal, the updated version of G1 plus the new stone giant adventure has me really wanting to see all the old classic 1E adventures updated for 4E. They're classics for a reason!

    D&D 4E Would you be interested in a dedicated 4e Site/Forum

Definitely... provided it has a strict "no threadcrapping" rule.

Advice on Running Temple of Elemental Evil

I won't answer your third question as I not a fan of T1-4... but I am a huge fan of what it could have been. (And one of the campaigns I am currently working on involves a lot of the same themes... and Lareth the Beautiful.) Advice 1. One of the things lacking horribly in the original was any...

    D&D 5E (2014) Grand Tour of the Realms - brainstorm a 5e adventure path

Let's start with Manshoon as the villain. What his goal? How about wiping out all the deities of FR. To do that he needs to unleash Pandorym. He's got the Zhents as his own private army and perhaps he has convinced the Cyricists in the ranks that he is working with them to free Cyric from his...

Got an Idea for a Campaign, now I need a ruleset

Savage Worlds. I find it's a great "go to" system for when I am not sure what would otherwise work. It's also got great (non-feral) fans who are very helpful should you need help developing ideas (and I am sure at least one has created a Kingmaker-like set of rules for SW).

Where is Christopher Perkins in all this?

I hope he is busy writing adventures! Seriously, along with the now-departed Rich Baker, his name on an adventure is practically a guarantee that it's going to be good. His talents are desperately needed if the new edition is going to be a success because, no matter how unsuccessful they are as...

    Elminster's Forgotten Realms

Yeah, Ed the Game Designer is very different to Ed the Author (especially Ed the Author is writing to spec). Even a cursory review of things like Eye on the Realms shows Ed is much more focussed on the smaller details and people of lesser import than the often turgid dreck that passes for a...

    What's an "Aragorn Style" ranger?

The first character in fiction that wielded two scimitars was, IIRC, Prince Rann from the War of the Powers. Rann was a major villain. There were six books published around 1980 and I vaguely recall that they were first serialised in Playboy in the 1970s or 80s. They're high fantasy... but...

D&D 4E Is Paizo ever going to shore up it's online support for Pathfinder like 4E does?

Quick question: is it still possible to do the database extraction from WotC?

D&D 5E (2014) 5E Forgotten Realms: what will it look like?

It's All About The Maps Whatever WotC decides to do with the timeline it's imperative that this time the map does not suck. The map for the 4E version of the Realms is possibly the worst world map for any RPG product of the past 20+ years. It verges on being useless in play as it lacks detail...

    Dungeon and Dragon Magazine Content

Short answer: yes. One of the problems with DDi is that the paid content typically appears very close to the end of the month. Welcome to WotC with a skeleton staff, perhaps....

    D&D 5E (2014) I am perfectly fine with WoTC producing D&D 5th Edition

I feel much the same way... except I would love to be able to rip out all the Compendium data before they do a new edition. Offline versions of the Monster Builder and Character Builder would also be wonderful. Alas, my computer skills are not that advanced....

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

Great thread. Great game. As a DM I appreciate the significantly lower prep time... and yet I can still create a stat block and mechanically reflect the race, class, template, theme and/or creature combination that I want. That rocks!

January 2012 Editorial - Romancing the Stone Giant

I totally agree. Mike Mearls strikes me as something of a "mad scientist". He's constantly tweaking with the rules often in a manner that feels like it isn't D&D but without fully considering the consequences in game (eg Iron Heroes). Chris, however, seems to have a strong sense of what D&D...

Against the Giants in the Forgotten Realms?

Post-Spellplague Realms? I would definitely go with Returned Abeir. Akanul is another suitable place, as is Luruar. If you chose not to run the frost giant adventure, I imagine it would also work well with East Rift. Pre-Spellplague Realms? The Silver Marches (aka Luruar or The North).

Book of Vile Darkness (short review)

That probably describes my own response as well. I can also sometimes get hung up on minor points: in this case it's some of the names the author has used. I really hate real world names in a product; "Sir Reginald", in particular, just rubs me the wrong way. I think the boxed set format was...

    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

Rich Baker? I always thought that if Rich Baker was terminated in one of these mass lay-offs that WotC is so fond of that it would be the beginning of the end of WotC. Perhaps that opinion is a bit extreme but he is genuinely talented. He's the only RPG designer who writes good novels and the...
