    D&D 5E (2014) Fun Temperate Woods/hills encounters

My PCs will soon be undertaking a many-days-long trip with a mule train and horses through old-growth temperate forest (think appalachians into the adirondacks). I can think of fun monsters to throw at them, but what would be some good non-monster encounters, or ways to take the ordinary...

When your regular DM can't (or doesn't want) to DM for a while, how do you prefer to rotate DM duties?

This. When I burn out, we take a few weeks or months off. Nobody else will DM.

    RPG Design & Arduous Research

If you go to the public library and ask for the bound periodicals, or periodicals on microfilm, you'll be able to find advertisements that should have prices for just about everything; just figure out which magazines or newspapers had car ads in them, and half your work will be done. Won't help...

D&D 5E (2014) How many encounters in an adventure? (math question)

Okay, I admit that math is not my strong suite. So bear with me if this is a really silly series of questions. I did try to figure it out on my own, and gave up in despair. I'm trying to design an adventure that will roughly cover the PCs advancement from level 6 to level 8. There are 5 PCs (on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeon Obstacles

I'm creating a dungeon, and by the random dungeon charts in the DMG, there should be "obstacles" in some rooms. However, the obstacle list in the DMG is pretty darn short, and all it says in the way of expanding it is that "obstacles are similar in implementation to traps" or something like...

    EN5ider #28: The Mystery of Mordecai's Monster

Yeah, read thru it today and am going to use it in the near future.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Success Story

As far as the magic items, just limit yourself to consumables for a while. It will work out. You may want to slowly beef up encounters to compensate, but 5e is remarkably resilient. Have fun!

D&D 5E (2014) Labyrinth-Tomb of the Minotaur Prince (and other random dungeons)

Sure will. I have already incorporated the Minotaur lair. I'm working on a random dungeon of my own - we'll see how that goes, too.

D&D 5E (2014) Labyrinth-Tomb of the Minotaur Prince (and other random dungeons)

Thanks! I'll look at it tonight. I really want to generate a random dungeon of my own; maybe next week I'll find the time.

D&D 5E (2014) Published Campaign Setting or Home Brew?

I've been playing DnD for nigh on 40 years. I've been running my campaign world for 30 of those. Yes, it has gone through massive changes as my tastes and my capabilities have changed, and as editions have forced changes - GRRRR.... I still resent losing the 2nd edition priest spheres - I never...

D&D 5E (2014) Labyrinth-Tomb of the Minotaur Prince (and other random dungeons)

I desperately need a fun/ silly dungeon crawl for ruins under a bard's manor. A brownie would be perfect. 5-6th levelish?

Looking for a low-level "PCs are hired by NPC" type adventures

Hmmm... as part of the 'dungeon-a-day' site, there was an adventure called "Temple of the Black Goat". The whole adventure was a sort of bait-and-switch in which the PCs come to Cold Comfort Ford - a small, isolated village - where adventurers are being hired by a group of halfling...

Resources for lost cities and "ruined city crawls"

This is actually a thread I started... and got some good advice. I've slowly been working on my ruined/blasted region, and have come up with some stuff - I'll be working on it more in the coming weeks, so you may want to check it again in at the end of summer...

a ghost-haunted manor house and its bardic master

500 years or so ago, IMC, there was a human-centric empire. The elves had gone mostly into hiding. One elf, a bard, became the guardian and protector of a magical passage that connected the hidden elvish land with the human material plane. This connection was necessary for the survival of both...

D&D 5E (2014) Labyrinth-Tomb of the Minotaur Prince (and other random dungeons)

I really like this dungeon. Could you put it up in easily downloadable form?

Introducing A Table Full of New Players To D&D and RPGs

Hmmm... for new players I like to go with VERY traditional scenarios. Perhaps once the good guy adventurers are out of town, a storm hits. Or there's a building fire. Or both. People need rescuing. Other people start stealing/looting. Someone offers a group of people protection, for a sum of...

    Quick! I need an adventure!

He replied to me today, and gave me his permission (claimed I didn't need it!). So I've started work on it here: http://vishteercampaign.pbworks.com/w/page/97821466/%22The%20King%27s%20Nightmares%22?securitymsg=true So, instead of having a nice simple adventure to run as filler, I've given...

Real world campaigns: local, or anything but?

I've actually set my DnD campaign in "real world" geography, but well away from my current location, geographically. It's nice to be able to pull out the world weather almanac and know what the daily precipitation for a given month is. And whether or not an area will be raising cattle for meat...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I'd forgotten those three owlbears! Hmmm... don't have any specific remembrance of magic being extraordinarily useful. Just that someone in the party tried to befriend one of them and failed. And was it Alzardel who ended up with the two intact hides? I know Doodle blew several stealth checks...
