    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

One is heavily argued. Different people have different opinion on game balance and what destroys it. So far in my own game even though the range of ability scores would be about 12 points in the point buy system the balance between character has been just fine. The most powerful character is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

In practice it was okay; the campaign was pretty awesome though. One guy just wasn't great at describing his character like that so felt hampered by the process. Another player admitted afterwards he didn't really read the descriptions. I figured something was up with him when he assigned the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

It's just treating people all the same. If we all agree to roll character except you then we don't roll characters. So there would be no need for you to hang back and see what happens. I want to come up with rules and guidelines that apply to everyone equally and everyone is happy with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

What it sounds like to me is you are asking everyone else to play by one set of rules and you by a different set. Everyone else will be rolling their characters but you hang back and see what way will be the most advantageous to you. For these games I like everyone to operate under the same set...

I like to roll attributes :D

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

No. I would ask the players that did make their characters if they liked them and were happy with their results. I'm not going to give one person special treatment so I need to make sure everyone else is happy and gets the same offer as player A. Then I'd tell player A, and anyone else that...

How big is your RPG collection?

I'm slowly slimming my collection down. It still in excess of a couple thousand books but last summer I did give away about 100 4e books and this summer I'm going to greatly trim down my 3e/Pathfinder collection.

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

If the players want to pick stats then let them. But if we agree to something first and then based on the results you want to change the rules that's where I have the problem. If you say "Let's roll and then if we are not happy we pick stats" I'm fine with that. Honestly, as long as the players...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

Ya, I think we game with completely different people. Reading these posts it almost sounds to me you have less issue with people rolling stats then of people cheating when they roll stats. Point buy at least potentially keeps everyone honest. I think with some of the players you seem to play...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

If you don't agree to the character creation rules then no one should be rolling anything. At least that's how we do it in games I'm in. If people are rolling up character then everyone has agreed to roll up characters. If you didn't agree to it but are going to do it anyway then get a backbone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

There is a word for that and it is called cheating. If everyone agrees to roll then you get to roll. Sure, some of those stat blocks are pretty good and others might not be so good but that's part of the game when you agree to roll up characters. If you want a fair game then everyone gets to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

I always found telling the DM what you want to the game to be about is better then building a character and having the DM use that to determine. In one of my current games there is a Paladin with a high Charisma. One might think that would mean he wants more social encounters and chances to use...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

This argument has been going on since point buy was introduced to the game. If Morrus closed down are the discussions that have gone on these boards before it would be a barren place.

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

We quit that version before it got to that point. One group of mine is doing Pathfinder now but when that finishes up hopefully next month we are also going to be moving away from that system. I'm looking forward to that day. Both those games were fun and we had many many years of enjoyment in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

I'd assumed as much. Thinking back on it while I know I have seen characters being over shadowed I just don't think it was ever just the stats to be blamed. It was either a player that wanted to hog the spotlight, or a class that was just better then another class.

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

I'm curious have you personally run into situations where you were not allowed to use point buy? I always felt the best argument for point buy and I bring it up because I haven't noticed it yet (I very well may have missed it as we are over 350 posts at this time) was when the player had a...

The classes were not equal before and they certainly are not equal with that attribute arrangement. It should be noted I was not the one who wanted that attribute arrangement, someone else suggested that. Since the classes are not balanced anyway this is not forcing them to choose from unequal...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attunement

My players take items like that and donate them to the church for the tax write off. :D

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

IMO, because not all the attributes are created equally. I'm not sure what you point here is. My comment was in response to the request that people who use dice rolls to show what the attributes would be using the point buy system to determine if in actual play people's attributes are higher...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic item and identifying

How would you carry all those items though? From just a few goblin encounters you might find a dozen javelins, short sword, maybe some shields. I remember those days to. Well, the game has changed. Even with all these changes D&D is still too much like OD&D for some people. For some people it...
