    Ride Skill in D&D 4

There was an article up on DDI about jousting a while back - see it here. In short, the skill challenge variant suggests Intimidate to cow your opponent, Nature to select and prepare your horse, and Athletics to manage the charge. In general, I use a variety during play. Typically Nature, as...

    Guns in a fantasy setting

For my last 3E D&D campaign I had this floating sky prairie called Driftwood, rich in minerals, that the major powers of the world were all fighting over. So it had settlers, railroads, gold mines, gunpowder (and skyships!). Worked surprising well. I recently put together some houserules for...

What's the big deal with large PCs?

Who said anything about wanting WotC to make these rules? EDIT: To clarify, the purpose of this thread, for me, was to scope out what people felt about it. Just for my own games.

    Deck of Illusions

Many thanks, I'm glad you like it :D There's a download button in the Scribd viewer, on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. If it's the cards themselves you're after, I'll be posting them up on the blog as they're completed, and then compiling them into a ready-to-print document once...

    Do you hate wish-lists too?

I find wish-lists enable players to create the heroes they want to play. Although it may impact immersion if handled lazily, a good DM should be able to work in a compelling reason why X item ends up in X lair. This said, your idea takes a lot of that pressure off, and maintains immersion. I...

What's the big deal with large PCs?

And just for the hell of it, here's an quick stab at the Ogre (using the flanking balancer proposed by Primitive Screwhead, above) :) BEING LARGE Large characters follow most of the same rules as Medium ones, with the following exceptions: Space: Whenever a large character uses an...

What's the big deal with large PCs?

Really, I'm not really seeing huge issues. Understandably large characters may not be to everybody's taste (much like tiny characters), but I don't think they'd be intrinsically broken. A quick "for" and "against": Larger footprint For: Easier to block enemy movement, more likely to trigger...

Athas located in the Feywild? In the Abyss? or in the Nine Hells?

Back in 3E, I ran a large section of my campaign set in this icy world based on the Frostburn book. The characters woke up there after a TPK, and adventured there for a few levels. Ultimately they discovered that this new world was actually a demiplane that existed within their own Archmage's...

Conditions when all damage is negated

True, true, that's sort what I meant. Really I should have said "in the unlikely corner case that this was a NPC wielding a weapon coated in consumable contact poison..." A monster (such as a drow), with a weapon attack with poison keyword wouldn't be bound in such a way.

Conditions when all damage is negated

As a general rule, conditions are not dependent upon dealing damage - and to rule so would mess with a number of PC powers. However, Poison does have this specific rule when applied to weapons (from the Compendium): -- Poisoned Weapon Attacks: You must apply a poison to a weapon. The poison...

    Some 4E steam-and-gear themes I made.

Reading the Zeitgeist campaign primer really inspired me to resurrect my old steampunk D&D setting, and to that end we've been putting together some unique 4E themes. I'll be playtesting these over the new few weeks, but I thought I'd link them here just in case anybody playing Zeitgeist...

    Bahamut and Tiamat

Not much to be brutal with here. I like what you've done with the opposing values now - Tiamat sounds far less evil. I particularly like the Wisdom vs Intelligence split. Bahamut sounds sort of "don't think - feel", whereas Tiamat is "Knowledge is Power". Your origin story is basically the...

What's the big deal with large PCs?

For terrain, I'm not actually proposing that the DM changes anything at all. I know I may be in the minority here, but I typically use dungeon tiles, where 2x2 passages are standard. On a larger tile, you'll get trees, pillars, rocks or what have you, which means I often have to squeeze large...

In the Spotlight: 4th edition and DPR

Interesting - I've not got any Lair Assaults near where I am in the UK, so I can't comment (but I don't really doubt what you're saying). Specifically, what I mean by "messing with my plans" though, is the ability for a decent party to absolutely ruin my chances of focus-firing on a single PC...

What's the big deal with large PCs?

Yeah, that's interesting. To me, toning down the racial abilities would be more appropriate to the 4E ethos than imposing a flat penalty. One of my players runs a warlord who's often mounted on a horse. It's a custom creature we've made called a Wind Steed, so it ignores the normal mounted...

In the Spotlight: 4th edition and DPR

Obryn mentioned sports above, and I think that's a very good comparison - especially when it comes to fans. A good team is obviously composed of solid defence and offence, but really, to the mass public it's the guys who score a goal/touchdown/slam dunk that get all the glory. But most fans...

What's the big deal with large PCs?

3E had more rules built into the system for this - but, like you say, 4E stripped most of them out. Regarding weapon and armour sizes, large creatures have just the same problems as small creatures, don't they? They're just a step up from normal rather than a step down. I see your point about...

What's the big deal with large PCs?

Many apologies if we've been here before, but what's really so wrong about having large PC races? Understandably they have a larger footprint on the grid, making them more likely to make opportunity attacks, and making defender auras/burst attacks all that much better. But isn't this offset...
