D&D 5E (2014) A playthrough of The Shattered Obelisk (spoilers)

I think you need to tell your players that this game isn't for fun but to satisfy the curiosity of internet people they never heard of. That should motivate them!

D&D General Worldbuilding Assumptions: On the Origin of Species

I usually keep it vaguely defined, but I do have one race I went into pretty thorough detail. The Yoon-Suin campaign setting has many strengths, and one of them is that it leaves the individual DM a lot of room to create their own version of Yoon-suin. The origin of slugmen wasn't explained...

Planescape My Notes about the Githzerai

Dak'kon's class is an interesting question in 5e. EK: maybe, but his magic seemed too potent for that Warlock (hexblade). Maaaaybe? Bladesinger: seems the best fit, but would need to be reflavored College of sword: hmmmm not really? another interesting - doesn't quite fit but still cool -...

D&D 5E (2014) Combat Encounters Per Dungeon Budget

So perhaps some more useful advice, following that nit-picking (sorry!): I think a major factor on how dangerous a dungeon is is how "reactive" the dungeon is. If, for a number of reasons, the party is able to take it one room at a time, it's much easier to manage. If however a fight in room...

D&D 5E (2014) Combat Encounters Per Dungeon Budget

When you say "hard or medium", do you mean encounters that are actually hard or medium, or hard or medium as defined by the DMG? I'm saying that because I - and many others - have found that a medium encounter, as defined by the DMG, is usually quite easy. Because given 2 short rests...

D&D 5E (2014) Combat Encounters Per Dungeon Budget

30 years of gaming, and this is the first time I've seen this recommendation. A rather handy rule of thumb! I also note that it needs 18 rooms minimum to "work" (given one sixth of one third).

D&D 5E (2014) Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

... really? PEG only protects vs a portion of foes, given the very limited amount of spells you can learn as an EK, I wouldn't take it...

thanks And - apologies if you've already stated this - where are we on the "old section, new section" portions of the adventure?

This sounds like a very good "in between" session. How much was your improv and how much was in the written adventure?

D&D 5E (2014) Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

Worse case scenario, the RK can redirect the attack to themselves, esp if the hill rune is going. Not ideal, but it can save a squishy ally.

D&D 5E (2014) Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

I concur. You can hold on to your halberd or great sword etc with one hand for a moment to cast a spell with the other. "Hand economy" is an important, but somewhat obscured, part of the game. A lot of GMs don't care, but some do.

D&D 5E (2014) Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

the RN has a number of method to shield allies from attack: the cloud rune the storm rune the runic shield One could argue that the control ability of the fire rune and stone rune can also help protect allies, but that's stretching the definition.

D&D 5E (2014) Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

I think it depends what you mean by "best tank". The EK can be more durable, yes, 100%. But the RK is better at protecting the party.

D&D 5E (2014) Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

I'm not sure I know how to answer that either. I should also note that the RK I played was, for a number of reasons, not "optimized" - he was a dex-build melee fighter, and RK works best with strength build (to take advantage of the size). However, the subclass is so strong it still worked...

D&D 5E (2014) Rune Knight Is The Best Fighter Overall IMHO.

I've seen all 3* in play, so I think I have a fair understanding of what each subclass can do. *I don't consider the echo knight because I haven't seen it in play but also because how poorly written the subclass is. It's a mess. I'm not sure I would agree that the RK is "the best". They have...
