    Playing AS monsters?

The Al-Qadim City of Delights box set for AD&D 2nd Edition in 1993 explicitly talked about how species viewed as "monstrous" in other settings could fit in just fine in the setting. It mentioned Goblins, Hobgoblins, Kobolds, Lizard Men, Ogres, Half-Ogres, Orcs, and Half-Orcs, and even allowed...

Interested in checking out non-D&D fantasy "old school" ttrpgs

Talislanta advertised itself as being distinctly and deliberately different from D&D and "typical" Western fantasy, and all editions of the game except the 6th are available free on their website. Talislanta – Still No Elves!

D&D General Does anyone recall coming across any magic weapons that return when thrown...other than Dwarven Thrower, Hammer of Thunderbolts or magic boomerangs?

A Goodman Games program guide from GenCon a few years back had a DCC writeup for the Glaive from Krull, one of the single most awesomely ridiculous weapons ever put to film. Yes, its a magical mechanical returning (and steerable) throwing star thing called the Glaive. Don't ask.

When you play in person, where do you play? (Poll)

I run two weekly DCC RPG games: one in person at a local goblin-themed coffe house/chocolatier (called Velvet, formerly known as Wilkins Coffee) and one online. The coffee house is great, and one of the owners has even participated in the game a time or two. I used to run games at a local FLGS...

What Is Your Go-To Pick-Up TTRPG?

The shifting attendance at my weekly Dungeon Crawl Classics game at a local coffee house/chocolatier means I have to be prepared to run a pickup game every week, in case nobody (or almost nobody) from the main game/previous week's game shows up. So I regularly run pickup DCC games and IMO the...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

Depends on which name you buy the license to use, I suppose.

    Doctor Which

My wife introduced me to Doctor Who with Eccleston, and we've watched through all the episoodes starting there except for the last half or so of the most recent season. I have to say that I have liked each Doctor more than the last, and Gatwa has just been divinely entertaining. So my votes go...

Looking for a properly bleak game for a paper.

Was coming here to suggest this one. It's prety solid as a setting. There was also a 5e seting called The Lost Citadel a while back. It's premise is that the PCs are residents of the last bastion of living ccivililzation in the world, which has ben overrun wioth undead. It's tightly written...

How did you learn to run or play Mage?

I played Mage in a general World of Darkness game ca. 1995 or 1996. While I loved the concept of the game, there seemed no character archetypes that matched what I wanted to play and it was so hard to make anyhting magical actually happen I soured on the whole system pretty quickly. I still...

    Worlds of Design: Playing Favorites

I voted "it changes over time," because that's true, but I also feel it's kind of splitting hairs. I started in TTRPGs with Earthdawn 1st Edition, but quickly fell in love with AD&D2e. I switched to 3e then 3.5 when they came out, took a breather udring the 4e era (more or less coincidentally)...

Which RPG has the best combat rules for flying vehicles?

There was an Unearthed Arcana on ships and the sea, and I used those rules pretty successfully for airships (they have a stat block for an airship in the article). They're simple enough and they work. https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/UA_ShipsSea.pdf

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

I run tough games, pretty much entirely D&D or D&D-derivative (such as DCC, which has been my go-to for a few years now). I think PCs should be exceptional inasmuch as they should have much greater chances of survival than common folks; that's why they're PCs. So toward that end I have players...
