Why Dragonlance's Margaret Weis Left TSR: A Slaying the Dragon Excerpt

And now I'm reading about other people reading the book and I REALLY want to read it myself, but I had to special order it from my local bookstore (they don't stock it) and of course it will arrive while I'm away at Gen Con. Truly, my life is one of endless torment.

Why Dragonlance's Margaret Weis Left TSR: A Slaying the Dragon Excerpt

Exactly! I was gonna end up buying it anyway, just not, you know, today.

D&D Movie/TV An Analysis of the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Trailer

My favorite things about the trailer are 1) the heroes - sorry, thieves - genuinely feel like a group of D&D characters the way people actually play them and 2) the movie seems to like Chris Pine about as much as I do.

Why Dragonlance's Margaret Weis Left TSR: A Slaying the Dragon Excerpt

An argument that would carry some weight if the person saying it was ALSO underpaid, but underpaid folks rarely make such statements IME.

Why Dragonlance's Margaret Weis Left TSR: A Slaying the Dragon Excerpt

Dragonlance was what introduced me to TSR (I literally had no idea what Dungeons & Dragons was when I read the Chronicles initially - or for a few years afterwards), so the Weis & Hickman story is of particular interest to me. Like many of us, I became a huge Weis & Hickman fan pretty much...

From Forgotten Realms to Red Steel: Here's That Full D&D Setting Sales Chart

Really the most surprising thing on that chart is that Planescape didn't sell better. I guess I wasn't the only one left wholly unimpressed by it (aside from DiTerlizzi's exquisite art, anyway). The 2nd most surprising? The popularity of Oriental Adventures. I knew it was big, but I never...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D New Edition Design Looks Soon?

You could be right. But I wonder what proportion of players/groups actually use DDB at all. I don't. For example, and several of my gamer friends had never even heard of it until I brought it up a few weeks ago. There's still a value in the surveys, is what I'm getting at.

Too Much Effort to Make New Characters?

It seems to me that your two best paths forward are: 1. The old "wake up stripped of your belongings and now you have a serious side quest before you can get back to the main plot" approach. This one can work well for introducing and seeding adventured down the line, as well - why did the...

    Top 3 All-Time RPG Supplements

The products that have seen the most use in my D&D games over years are 1. Secrets of the Lamp by Wolfgang Baur 2. The Illithiad by Bruce Cordel 3. Dragon Kings by Timothy Brown

    Spelljammer 64-page Spelljammer books?

At least it's a new product format, with new physical stuff included. It's pricy, but it ain't nothin'.

D&D 5E (2014) When do you hide and when do you reveal DCs?

After the 2nd or 3rd roll succeeds or fails, I just tell the players the DC/AC/whatever. I like to maintain the mystery and tension, but not at the expense of slowing down the game unnecessarily.

    D&D General Willpower and ... Charisma ??

Personally, I prefer the DCC approach: combine Wisdom and Charisma into one Personality score. The fine distinctions between the two become moot when there the same, and it's a lot easier to distinguish between what should be an Intelligence check vs. a Personality check than between INT vs. WIS.

    Spelljammer 64-page Spelljammer books?

Realistically, the price point for D&D books has held steady at $50 for a hardcover for 8 years now. With all the increases in material (and, we must assume, labor) costs in that time, you can bet that WotC has been looking for a way to increase prices without looking too obviously like they're...

Describe your last rpg session in 5 words

Extra characters mean no TPK! (Another playtest of a DCC module intended for publication - its body count is perchance a little high, even for a DCC funnel)

D&D General Did You "Return" because of some Edition of D&D?

I stopped playing when 4e came out. That had as much to do with getting married as anything else, but it's also true that I disagreed with 4e's changes and omissions relative to 3.x. but I never stopped thinking and reading about the game. When the Next playtest started a few years later I was...

Basic D&D Was Selling 600,000+/Year At One Point

You didn't fix anything, serious or no; I remain thoroughly unimpressed by OSE. To each their own, but for my money DCC does virtually everything Basic/BECMI/RC etc tried to do and improves upon them 1,000%. It isn't a rehash, it's an alternate vision of what the game could have - nay, SHOULD...

Nahhh. DCC has us more than covered there.

    D&D 5E (2014) Favorite 3PPs' setting?

I don't think so either. I actually reached out to Rick Baker years ago with an idea for a Primeval Thule supplement - and possibly a supplement series - but he politely declined. They were focused on Alternity at the time, and it looks like they never made it back to Thule. Which is a damn shame.
