WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

The detail is in how you define loosing. If it's not just death then newer DnD has just as much risk in it as older DnD and it becomes a silly contrast to make.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

It also feels a little hypocritical since 5e 2014 wasn't exactly a game designed to put PC's through the meat grinder and he was one of the lead designers for it. It feels like he's salty his version isn't the main one anymore and so he's going to poop as much as possible on the revision.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Huh? Fun and emotion can come in a variety of different forms and not all fun or emotional investment is tied to stakes and risk... otherwise why not just play high stake casino games vs. Ttrpg's. No its the smug and frankly arrogant attitude that somehow you (general, Mearls or even you with...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

This was my take as well... of course in social media land this post is already being latched onto by a certain segment of the OSR as a rant against safety tools in 5e D&D by one of its creators. This segment is pretty much why I have little to no interest in the OSR community outside of Shadowdark.

    D&D 5E (2024) The Ray Winninger Era of D&D 5e

Planescape nuff said. Drops mic Yeah not sure why some people lump the Planescape setting in with Spelljammer quality wise... I assume it's because they haven't actually readit but are making assumptions.

Salty seems to sum it up perfectly... smh. He's giving off real...where and when did DnD hurt you vibes lately. Not a good look at all.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I'm just saying you weren't reallya D&D 5e customer or fan before '24 so it's not really shocking you didn't buy the new corebooks for a game you already disliked.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

And the same thing can happen with physical books, 1 person buying more than 1 copy... correct or is there a limit of 1 per customer? And, at least in tthe earnings call... they said books, right? So it's settled, at least at that point its clarified as books ..right? You're not accounting...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Yeah but at a practical level more copies of the '24 rules are selling faster (regardless of format) than any other. Or more people bought physical books direct, or the classification of DnD at Amazon and other outlets skewed the numbers, or... more pointless speculation.

Why does whether the rulebook is bought in print or digital format matter? EDIT: Also couldnt product mean it sold better than any of their products, including and going beyond just books?

Didn't you move on from 5e before the '24 corebooks came out?

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

No one's arguing it should be. Couldnt you just use the optional rest rules for 5e in the DMG?

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

Yes part of the game and trivially overcome, which is what I was originally addressing. No one said it just vanished but it's no longer a major obstacle to adventurers in this tier and that's consistent with the description I posted.

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

Really? You're just being unnecessarily pedantic at this point... you are literally facing demons, dragons, and raising the dead... but the real challenge of the adventure is dealing with a cold...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

I think 5e is pretty clear in describing its Tiers of Play... from the 5e DMG... As characters grow in power, their ability to change the world around them grows with them. It helps to think ahead when creating your campaign to account for this change. As the characters make a greater impact...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

You addressed and quoted me... I believe some posters have asked about houserules or solutions...but that wasn't the discussion I was having.

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

We are discussing official D&D and whether play of it should or shouldn't include mundane threats being major obstacles for 5th level or higher characters. Not sure how houserules relate to this except so far as anyone who wants to can houseful them to be in D&D.

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

No the assertion was that they are trivially easy to overcome or circumvent... and they shouldn't be. But they always have been... even the bounded accuracy goblin that can still hit you at 5th level is trivially easy to overcome at 5th level.

You want proof of a negative? Ok the fact that the rules and spells to trivialize these things after 5th level exist kind of supports my point.

Well then perhaps you and @Lanefan should find a system (or system add on) that better represents your world.
