I think (only because I have gamed with this player for years), and I'll revisit this after Saturday to confirm... they mean more in the vein of a survivalist... hunting, tracking, building shelter, etc. But I could also see your interpretation and may bring it up as I think it would compliment...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Not an advert... an example/sample/guide to how to run/play this new game... which I think many who bought the game are expecting. I tune in to see the game's biggest proponents (along with being the owners) play the game they claimed was specifically made to cater to their playstyle in order...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I don't... can you elaborate, because I feel like people are literally asking for basic rules competency not perfection. Right now, if my only experience was watching their actual play... I'd honestly be asking myself what the actual difference is in play between DH and D&D... why do I need to...

I have one experience from a player I think might be a problem... She's a sorcerer who took Survivor as a background. I'm going to discuss what that actually entails this Saturday before our game to make sure we are on the same page or to maybe revise it into exactly what she is trying to...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I'm admittedly not familiar with a ton of narrative games but many of the the ones I have read usually phrase it as... When a question of whether something like an experience is appropriate it should be a group discussion... Which (when followed) is a different procedure from giving the GM...

This discussion of optimization is interesting... moreso because I am making my way through AoU episode 4. There's an interesting exchange in the beginning of that episode where Matt has to shut Taliesin Jaffe down because he tries to use an overly vague experience... "i'm absolutely supposed to...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I dont think CR necessarily needed to have designed the game to showcase it by having the rules down. Regardless of whether it's a "teaching Daggerheart" stream or not... its their product, and the expectation that you would showcase it properly seems a pretty low standard. No one's claiming it...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I believe the book recommends that if you can't think of anything else... the thing is with Daggerheart not having codified skills and the characters having a nice selection of pre-fabricated combat choices in the form of their powers... I think most players are going to want to define...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Yeah I've been enjoying the story as well, and I agree, it's a disservice not to know the rules of your own game... especially since it's new and many are watching to get a feel for how to play, run and adjudicate this new game. I can also imagine that it puts major, unnecessary pressure on...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I don't think this is that big of an issue as far as collaboration goes. I get that Matt is running a plotted game but even along that plotted path there are chances for the players to add color, interesting facts, and build out their relationships with NPC's in a collaborative fashion... he...

LOL!! We did character creation on Saturday (I'm going to do a shortish Witherwild campaign to get a better handle on the game) and not a single player picked a Stress potion. Those D&D habits die hard.

Eh... you can clear stress on a short rest, so I'm not sure I would declare it a daily resource. The other factor is that the number of Hope is really determined by the number of rolls your GM calls for and what you roll. Which is to say I don't think there's as clean or as direct a...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I see Daggerheart as much more of a tactical/crunchy PbtA variant than a D&D variant. Honestly I think this game might address my group's biggest issue with PbtA, ( the feeling it lacked mechanical omph in play) our first game is Saturday so we'll see.

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

Wouldn't that in turn be influenced by factors like conventions being the place more people would use to try a new game? Which is to say I'm not sure why it would be a better measure of interest... Also I believe Google search h trends can be adjusted to capture different timeframes.

Thats why I asked about in play. Daggerheart definitely suggests and even advocates for you as GM to have your players answer questions about the world while playing that help to define it.

I'm hoping Matt and company take some time to familiarize themselves with the system before doing a longterm game. I think if they are going to switch it should really showcase why they (or anyone else) would choose it over D&D...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Yeah I'm honestly finding it hard to see how, other than less tactical/grid-based combat, this series is highlighting what makes Daggerheart stand out. No real collaboration and little if any narrative impact when hope or fear is rolled (other than passing out the meta-currency)... I've...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Have their been any examples in this AP of the type of worlbuilding collaboration that the actual rulebook seems to push pretty hard. I'm thinking I may just have overlooked or forgotten about it but are there examples of Matt asking his player collaborative worldbuilding questions during the...

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon US book sales rank.

This is another point that needs to be viewed with a grain of salt... The Avatar the Last Airbender ttrpg did gang busters in kickstarter sales and yet it's actual playerbase is nearly non existent. This is one of the issues with having a fandom that arent necessarily gamers or going to play...
