D&D General The New York Times on D&D

Simple yes or no question... are you a black American? FYI: From your simplistic take on the hadozee art that you give above I'm betting no.

2025 Monster Manual Will Contain Over 85 New Monsters

The average user is going to try and use the stat block as is... probably feel they are doing something wrong if they can't and feel they aren't skilled enough to make modifications without it messing the game up.

2025 Monster Manual Will Contain Over 85 New Monsters

So do you believe its a problem with the system or a problem with choices certain DM's make when running the game? I got the impression you were presenting it as an inherent issue with the system but if not... Then I can accept it's possible to run 5e in a way that might cause this problem.

2025 Monster Manual Will Contain Over 85 New Monsters

So it's based on a DM allowing long rests too frequently ... along with only using Medium and Hard encounters... but also having monsters with high hp's and low damage output... This doesn't sound right... why are characters who are at full power most of the time taking a long time to dispatch...

2025 Monster Manual Will Contain Over 85 New Monsters

Yeah 3-4 rnds for me is max where my PC's either have a string of bad rolls or maybe get caught of guard or something... but I'm struggling to think of an average non-threatening encounter in 5e taking excessive time for my players to beat.

2025 Monster Manual Will Contain Over 85 New Monsters

Wait... in 5e you have combats regularly taking place that both pose no threat to the PC but also don't resolve quickly... why? And what kind of encounters are these. I'm genuinely curious because I've never experienced this. IME most combats that don't pose any threat to my Pc's are wrapped...

2025 Monster Manual Will Contain Over 85 New Monsters

If they are having fun... why does the combat feel like a waste of time?

2025 Monster Manual Will Contain Over 85 New Monsters

I find combat where my overhead is continually taxed by numerous tracking and implementing of mechanics to be...booring. 1. It leaves less cognitive space for me to be creative in description, roleplay, etc. 2. It drags out combats that are meant to serve as pacing or tension building elements...

D&D 5E (2024) "D&D Monster Manual 2025 is going to pack a serious punch thanks to a family of monsters descended from gods, and frankly I’m terrified"(Gamesradar)

I'm chalking this up to the holidays and the timing of the release... I think after New Years we'll get much more.

D&D General 5e D&D to OSR pipeline or circle?

The tables in WWN are really good in this area and are definitely the most detailed subsystem in the book.

D&D General 5e D&D to OSR pipeline or circle?

The apples to oranges comparison was a PC facing a knight in Shadowdark vs a noble in 5e. Not an OSR combat vs a 5e combat. Who? Or is disagreeing with someone's opinion considered being "upset" now? I think it's an easier process because there are no guidelines around expected difficulty in...

D&D General 5e D&D to OSR pipeline or circle?

Combat in the Dolmenwood PHB is 4 pages long. Each of the magic systems is explained in 2 pages or less.

D&D General 5e D&D to OSR pipeline or circle?

PC level goes to 20 and in a world where duels happen it would actually stand to reason that the powerful and rich 2ould have professional champions who are highly skilled combatants. So are we talking a single noble who happens to be an exceptional duelist or tons of high level characters in...

D&D General 5e D&D to OSR pipeline or circle?

Regardless the question was about the most detailed subsystem being combat. But I'd say most/many are inch based tactical power fantasy. Edit: Which is to say fundamentally the same.

D&D General 5e D&D to OSR pipeline or circle?

Why? For me the solution seems to be disregard the encounter guidelines when designing your adventure and/or run higher level adventures for more danger. Huh? Doesn't this depend on the level of the PC, HD of the noble in the OSR game... and why couldn't my noble in 5e have a Stat block that...

D&D General 5e D&D to OSR pipeline or circle?

What would you say OSR games most detailed sub system is? I mean I'm sure there are outliers but in general I've found it to also be combqt....

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

All stories have an end. It's the structure of a story. And in using campaign settings for their intended purpose I'd want more gameable material... which destroying the setting ends.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

The same could be said for your attachment to lore... you can play with... sorry, read whatever lore you like, regardless of what WotC and 5e decide to do concerning it.

Ok well we don't need to discuss it further. I don't like being framed as antagonistic when trying to better understand a preference. Because you do... hey good enough for me.
