And, as Crothian stated, they may not be able to do that. Contracts are contracts. There are rules based on the number of episodes the person is in, their status as a regular, etc.

The other island makes sense. In season 2, when they found the other hatch, with the video monitors, the film mentioned that they'd have a shift (2 days? a week?) and then go to the boat for their off-time.

Toddlers are too difficult to deal with on film. Most tv babies are infants for way too long, and then mysteriously become 3.5 years old. ;)
