The difference is mine won't all stack - two skilled doesn't make expert for example. The key is those stats and level - the words tell you how to use them.

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

LIke so many things, I'm making the difference between medium and heavy armor descriptive, with the caveat that descriptive is important when you've been thrown into a river and need to lighten the load, or are trying to jump over a pit full of spikes, or someone is aiming at your legs, or when...

Skill Level Modifier -10 Completely unknown -5 Inexperienced / Untrained 0 Trained / Adept +2 Skilled +5 Expert Without class and race, think of every protocharacter as essentially a chump. Every action is either untrained or completely unknown. The description of class and race are...

    Recruiting - World Building game

Everybody had 50 points of Mastery. First player (I'll randomly list the turn order) spends 2 points to pitch an idea. The pitch is max 120 words and 1 300x400 pixel picture. That can be anything you want about the world - ANYTHING from a description of a beggar who sleeps behind the inn to...

    Recruiting - World Building game

Hi guys, I've got a world building game that I'd like to try. We need ~ 5 players and can handle more, it's like a forum game.

It was inspired by OD&D (1974) and how much you don't need and can still run with.

There are 6 stats, as usual, expressed as stat modifiers. Add level to those to get the 6 stats that are used for most actions: Might, Reflex, Fortitude, Insight, Will, and Style. Pretty much anything the PCs do is rolling 1d20, adding one of those 6, and then adding... -5 if untrained /...

These are pretty good, but I need to rework them as what Humans / Halfings etc. do, rather than what they are. Halflings are skilled at throwing rocks and face terrifying situations with great courage. They are adept at wriggling through tight spaces and dodging away from danger.

Basically I'm working on an ultralite d20 game, where these short words on the character sheet and common sense are all you need to define a character's capabilities (beyond level and 6 stats). You start as a 1st level (Race) (Class) and each session get to change one phrase about your...

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

So far so good? Edit: I should add that the reason for this was one of my old crew asked me to write a lite d20 that still had "5th Level Dwarven Fighters" and "STR/DEX/CON/INT/WIS/CHA" so I'm looking at microlite and doing that.

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

So here's the idea: Stat mods like 3e (STR +0, DEX +1, etc.) and Level. Add level to each stat and you have the secondary stats: Might, Reflex, Fortitude, Insight, Will, and Style. Hitpoints are (5+CON)*Level. Core mechanic is Players (and players only) roll 1d20+Secondary Stat+Modifiers...

A very strange house rules thread

I've got a superlite d20 variant. For it, I need to define classes and races in words rather than mechanics. I need to give a general idea of a 1st or 2nd level character's basic capabilities in the text description. For example: Wizards can read and detect magic, create magical light and...

Welcome back 'wulf! Can I bounce some ideas off of you? I'm working on something Microlite-ish.

What do the rules have to look like for it to be D&D to you?

Curious, I didn't think AC was that essential... it reminds me of THAC0. I'd be happy to trade it in for saves (say, DEX / CON mod + Level + 10 ). I'd still think of that game as D&D.

What do the rules have to look like for it to be D&D to you?

To me, if it's got this: 5th Level Dwarven Fighter STR: #, DEX: #, CON #, INT #, WIS #, CHA # HP: 40 - and all that bold stuff means something important in a game mechanics way, then it's D&D.
