    A setting with no canon

That's fair. There's a hook about a revolt that is really about the perspective of lifelong slaves and is titled Rice. You're not going to find it under "Slavery" or "Slave Revolt" because it makes sense to call it rice, and the fact that rice is the major crop is important to the setting...

    A setting with no canon

The project is structured as a collection of 400-500 word entries, so they're not tiny quotes. The focus isn't on creating a bunch of contradictory information, although there is some contradictions when it comes to some of the more mythical elements. The focus is more on creating situations...

    A setting with no canon

Wow, if I could just see... Well, quack. Any chance we could do some kind of exchange via babelfish? Then again, I guess you don't need to exchange, you could just take the great hundred since it's Creative Commons anyway.

    A setting with no canon

Right - contrasts with games like Forgotton Realms where sometimes the players have read books or supplements set in the Realms and expect those books to be followed. This can be even more dangerous when you're playing with other DMs. :)

    A setting with no canon

Stuff that's taken to be the objective truth of the setting - so if I write something in my setting like: "The Material Plane is coextensive with the Ethereal." and I'm writing it as Ryan Stoughton, author, then I'm saying taht if you play in this setting you're playing in a setting that has an...

    A setting with no canon

I've heard people get into arguments over what's canon and what's not, and something cool just occured to me. To back up for a sec: I'm working on an open, systemless fantasy setting with some other people. We're doing this with snippets of text from the voices of various characters of the...

Which version of D&D for young children?

Honestly I don't think any edition of D&D is simple enough for a 4 year old; my cousin is 4 and I'd be trying something like: We're going to tell a story, and this big plushie d6 is going to help us, OK? You need to use the dice when you do something. I'll tell you what you see, you tell me...

I should mention that the Great Hundred is a welcoming, happy home for scraps of your old projects (even ones that are totally bog-standard fantasy but cool ideas - they can be converted culturally).

    Open. Systemless. Modular.

Now, maybe someone's thinking "This looks cool, but I don't really need a new setting." here's the pitch: Since the Great Hundred is structured as individual entries, you don't need to take the entire thing to make use of it. Each entry is both a Situation (i.e. an adventure seed) in...

Redmage, Asmor: Feel free to just create a second profile with the real names. The wrong ones are like one line of database and have not spawned actual pages.

(Digs around to see what Asmor's talking about). Mediawiki comes with the optional real name field built into its user definitions. I will look for the page code to remove it. I hadn't thought about the confusion because I thought the opening page was sufficient. The reason I want real...

Feel free. The legal implications are (keeping in mind that I'm not a lawyer, I just selected the licenses): You agree your contribution can be edited, deleted, remixed, changed, ignored, and so on, and it can be published along the terms of the two licenses of the project. We don't have...

    Open. Systemless. Modular.

Bump - I shouldn't have characterized it as exotic, the system has distinctive flavor but modularity is more central to the concept. In fact, it would be easy to take most of the entries out and put them straight into a Dune-like sci-fi game, a Tigana-like world, or an Eberron island.

Yeah, I tried to avoid it, but the idea was just too good to leave in the dark. The new guy talks tough. Let's see if he walks the walk. :D

Write a letter to your favorite game. . .

Dear D&D, For a long time I felt like we were drifting apart. Maybe we've never been perfect for each other, but we try, and trying is really important in a long-term relationship like ours. I want you to know that I appreciate how hard you're working to be a better game, and I'm working hard...

    Open. Systemless. Modular.

There's room for all sorts of methods, you can come in, comment, leave for a while, come back, write a few paragraphs, leave for awhile, drop some art in, whatever. The project is very flexible from the perspective of new contributors. That said, I am hoping to find some more active...

Absolutely! Art would great - just be aware that like text contributions you'll be under the same licenses. Other people will be able to remix, use it in their projects, and so on. The upside is that you will also have all this stuff to remix, use in your projects, and so on. :)

The Great Hundred project has begun: http://www.greathundred.org The project is designed to produce an open content system-independent exotic fantasy supplement. The supplement will take the 120 best entries from the project, along with art donated to the project, and produce a free .pdf...
