    D&D 5E (2014) 5.0 necromancer

Edit: A nice tweak might be something like, when you cast animate dead at a higher level, you may choose to either animate more dead (two per additional level is it), which is how it is now written; or you may choose to make it last longer, say an additional day per spell level. Maybe 12 hours...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5.0 necromancer

I was reading through the Necromancer last night, and one thing I noticed that I would definitely tweak is to add to the Undead Thrall (6th level) ability, that if you already have animate dead, then you can add a different spell to your spell book instead. (Just as the Illusionist's Improved...

    D&D 5E (2014) Quirks & Exploits

I don't disagree. Just stating what the quote was getting at. I think there's room for discussion as to whether the intended implications of "ally" here include an unintelligent animal, even trained and acting under commands. Now that I think about it, though, wolves have Pack Tactics which...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cleric Domains in PHB

Interesting. How reliable is your source? :-) Should other domains be expected? Any other tidbits from the DMG, whether reliable or spurious? As for me, I'm not sure how I feel about the domains yet, but I haven't looked closely enough. Domains as subclasses does seem like a pretty elegant...

    D&D 5E (2014) Quirks & Exploits

They are unaligned in the sense that this term is defined in the alignment section and reserved for creatures unable to make moral choices, which includes all unintelligent animals. As for whether an animal under your control is an "ally" or not for the purposes of these rules... I think...

    D&D 5E (2014) spells in 5.0

Sentinel Feat When you hit a creature with AoO, it's movement is reduced to 0. "You're goin' nowhere!" Creatures within 5' of you provoke AoO even when they use the disengage action. When a creature within 5' of you attacks a target other than you (and that target doesn't have this feat) you...

D&D 5E (2014) What's one thing that pleasantly surprised you, and one thing that disappointed you about the PHB?

We have a bard player from the playtest who was really disappointed to see Call to Battle disappear, as she started every major battle with it. But I tried to console her with the fact that Bards are full casters now. I haven't looked through the Bard spell list yet, so I don't know how much...

D&D 5E (2014) What's one thing that pleasantly surprised you, and one thing that disappointed you about the PHB?

I completely agree with this, but I think it comes down to space as a premium for printing. If they do digital books, I expect (hope, pray) for links and bookmarks. But also, I'm not terribly worried by this because this is a problem that should just go away with digital tools, which I intend to...

    D&D 5E (2014) spells in 5.0

I think both some detractors, and some proponents overlook them. Which is too bad, because saying 5e is basically just Xe with tweaks (with 1<X<5) is ignoring a lot of what they've done.

    D&D 5E (2014) spells in 5.0

I haven't read all the spells yet. There's a part of me that is a little disappoint how "not game-breaking" some of the higher level spells are. The 2e spells really captivated my adolescent mind, and by making them reasonable they're making them somewhat less... magical. But I can live with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Quirks & Exploits

Are you thinking of Sneak Attack, or am I missing something in the Rogue class? Sneak Attack doesn't grant advantage, just extra damage. Also, that seems like a liberal interpretation of "ally". I wouldn't say an unintelligent mount is an ally. Now, if that rogue were riding a dragon, then sure.

D&D 5E (2014) Things That Make a DM Say "Whoa?!?!"

I agree these are awesome, but it'll take time (and the MM) to know how over-powered they are. Even Kobolds get advantage whenever they're within 5' of an ally (Pack Tactics). In fact, this power is just mimicking the Pack Tactics feature of the wolf (hence Wolf Totem). So, there's cool stuff...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

I don't even understand the people who are condemning D&D for not "going in a bold new direction"... 4e proved that to do so opens it up to attacks of "not being D&D" which proved harmful overall to the brand, despite 4e being a very well designed game in its own right. And while it may not...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

I was just thinking about this last night... I often put R.A. Salvatore down as something of a hack because of his writing style, but his characters (those I've read at least) are quite deep, and his storylines are great. I'd love to see the Icewind Dale trilogy played out on the screen.

D&D 5E (2014) What's one thing that pleasantly surprised you, and one thing that disappointed you about the PHB?

Title says it all. If you have to pick one thing that picked you up, and one thing that let you down, what would they be? I'm sure most of us have many on both sides. But pick one; and try to keep it balanced. My pleasant surprise: I finally got around to reading through the Wizard class last...
