D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with a trouble player and a major blow up

It turns out that there are people in my gaming community who I don't get along with. If it amounts to a problem in game, I don't play with them. If he couldn't deal with what the DM said about him, then he shouldn't have been at the table. It's certainly clear that he has no business being at...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

I was accusing him of tossing around "bad and harmful" for things that were a nuisance to him and ignoring things that caused people to lose their jobs and a number of RPG companies to go under. It is not inconsistent necessarily, but it is disproportionate.

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

What is your point? Are you arguing that Paizo was bad and wrong and WotC was not bad and wrong?

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

WotC publishing 3.5 just caused our fellow gamers to lose their jobs. But, no, offering players an option is much, much worse, then crashing a large part of the RPG industry.

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

It's not really worth noting that; if Paizo is harmful and wrong for creating Pathfinder, then WotC was harmful and wrong for creating D&D 3.5. The OGL was a done deal at that point.

the guy behind the failed cthulu/monopoly Kickstarter got in trouble...

If you're not an artist, art is going to take money, too. The more you front-load it, the less Kickstarter works for people who couldn't have done it without Kickstarter. But a 160 page book shouldn't take 3 years, especially not if you've promised it in 5 months.

D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with a trouble player and a major blow up

I don't hire Lars Ulrich if I want Chumbawamba, and I don't hire Eddie Murphy if I want Melissa McCarthy. Entertainers are not interchangable.

the guy behind the failed cthulu/monopoly Kickstarter got in trouble...

It's the classic problem, that you can't get blood from a stone, and you can't just take away everything and expect them to work hard enough to come up with it all. In similar but lesser news, Metamorphosis Alpha Roleplaying Game by Jamie Chambers has delivered a final PDF, almost three years...

Erik Mona on Paizo Releases and D&D 5E's Impact

Paizo stopped doing the pulp reprints they used to do, and Erik Mona explained that they weren't unprofitable, but it simply wasn't worth putting someone on it they could have edit one of the Pathfinder novels. I think WotC is in the same bind; it may be worth keeping it in print, but the sales...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

You'll notice it's no longer when the OGL first came out. The response to 3rd Edition/OGL was a one-time thing. It is entirely possible that without an OGL, a number of the companies putting out D20 material might have just been hurt or killed by the overwhelming reaction to D&D 3. Without the...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

History does not agree. In the 1970s everyone was doing class and level systems, and even the later RIFTS uses a system that's a lot more similar to D&D then a lot of OGL games. If Steve Jackson had wanted a D&D rip-off, he could have wrote one instead of GURPS. Yes, when the OGL was a bright...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Yes, because the OGL would have stopped people from thinking we need a cyberpunk-fantasy or a western-fantasy game or a science-fiction-cyberpunk-kitchen-sink-fantasy game. And that's why we don't proclaim that someone is harmful and wrong just based on our own experiences. So you are...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

And it's entirely possibly you were getting paid more then any non-CEO in RPG history has. RPG employees have chosen their goals in life, and it's not to get rich. Besides which, where's the money coming from? It's hard when dealing with something that's already hypothetical, but Hasbro isn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Giving people choices is harmful and wrong? That's, um, a radical economic theory. And made many other people's experiences better, by giving us a chance to play a supported edition we enjoyed more. Then every game company that has ever put out a new edition is harmful and wrong. Fan...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

They don't just have the rules. Who ever took the lead would have an existing name, whether it Fantasy Flight or Onyx Path or Steve Jackson Games or Rite Publishing. I don't see it likely at all that a half-dozen serious competitors would arise; there's few enough people and little enough money...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

If however implausibly speaking Hasbro bought out Paizo and killed Pathfinder, if someone plausibly claimed to grab the title from Paizo, they would have Paizo's subscribers. They couldn't afford to drop the ball, but it wouldn't be undirected movement, like at the end of D&D 3. It would be a...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Where's the win? Hasbro would be causing uproar, and yet not doing anything about Paizo and Troll Lord Games.

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

The 3e OGL. The fact that you've got people out there publishing 5e work using the old OGL. It's an increasingly moot point, but I'm really surprised they've let their control over 5e slide the way they have, when they could have kept the illusion of control easily.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Excerpt: Creating a New Race

So what are the stats for clerics of Leira in 3rd, 4th or 5th edition? From a different perspective, if I'm using the current Forgotten Realms, I can hand that edition's Forgotten Realms Adventures to anyone who wants to know what's going on. If I hand someone the 2E Forgotten Realms Adventures...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

And the customers who bought indiscriminately until they suddenly realized it was a bad idea and then quit. I'm pretty sure that a shopkeeper who did not buy D20 would have had trouble, as well. Can't we describe it impersonally as a market bulge and collapse, which is pretty hard for anyone but...
