Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Bard Colleges!

only in the sense that in Dark Sun, bards are spies and assassins. But the actual abilities don't feel very Dark Sun to me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Longswords

Smallsword or Courtsword would work. It's a later period weapon, but has the advantage of being a very light, finesse weapon. If you want something a little earlier--sidesword might work too.

Unearthed Arcana What does Unearthed Arcana need?

Not a knock on whatever it was in Bo9S. I'm sure there would be something cool there, maybe a kensai that turns rages into "intense focus"-redefining what the class is. But what I want is something like the Champion, but for the barbarian. Something like this...a young Barbarian, let's call...

Unearthed Arcana What does Unearthed Arcana need?

Tony, on the Barb--I don't think we have; what seems to always happen is, they always seem to ratchet the barbarian even more savage. But I don't want to have to multiclass into fighter (especially in this edition) in order to develop my character as someone who, while still tapping into the...

Unearthed Arcana What does Unearthed Arcana need?

I don't think they need to worry about numbers...just go for holes that aren't easily filled. So far, it seems they are going for more "flavorful" choices--cornercase archetypes with very specific backstories that aren't easily expanded to fit a broader definition. This is disappointing...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Bard Colleges!

While I like the flavor of each of the subclasses, I don't really like the abilities. They feel very specific and much less general use than the ones in the PHB; I don't care for temporary hit points. And the College of Whispers again just pushes the game into "everything is magical".

D&D 5E (2014) Melee Weapons and Proficiency Reimagined - Homebrew

Looks good to me. The thrown range for a light weapon seems a little long to me-it's not unbalanced, but it seems a little out of realistic range. Likewise, I think it would be simpler for two-handed weapons to do 1d8 & 1d12 damage rather than the 2d4 & 2d6. For one thing it keeps a similar...

    D&D 5E (2014) Finesse Paladin - Opinions Wanted

My wife played one for a year and a half. It worked great. I actually find DEX builds to be a little OP, especially in games without feats--even then, they're better, but there are some options-Shield Master and Great Weapon Mastery that give a little balance to the STR build.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E AD&D Restricitons

All that's fine...I think you're overstating how many women were alienated by it; it exists on exactly one page in one version of the game; More people know about it now than people did then (because people keep bringing it up to attack old D&D) it's got about as much impact on the game as the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E AD&D Restricitons

Why does this always come up? Female characters did not have a strength penalty. They did have a hard limit on their score...18/50 to be exact, which got enforced about as often as the 18/75 strength limit for male elves, or the 18/99 limit for dwarves and half-orcs. Which is, by the way...

Unearthed Arcana New Barbarian Primal Paths in November 7th Unearthed Arcana

I think to an extent it's a failure of imagination. It's easy to come up with a magical sounding argle bargle to explain some interesting mechanical game widget. In their defense, it's tougher to do that using purely mundane description, and it also runs the risk of needlessly granularizing...

Unearthed Arcana New Barbarian Primal Paths in November 7th Unearthed Arcana

None really grab me off the top of my head. Was hoping for a "civilized barbarian" subclass-essentially something for a Conan pastiche--basically a Champion overlay for barbarian you can do without multiclassing, for those barbarians who come out of the wilderness and actually learn the...

    D&D 5E (2014) On Attributes

There is a good reason to keep using the 6 stats we have now. "We've always done it that way". Once you move away from something everybody has acquiesced to; no particular set of stats has any weight of authority behind it. You wind up with dozens of competing standards, instead of one...

D&D 5E (2014) Killing is bad: how to establish morality

Was coming here to post this. With a little creativity, even spellcasting narration can be done nonlethally; it used to be done in comic books all the time. The lightning bolt that dropped the orcs to zero hit points didn't hit them, the wizard cast it at the ceiling above, which dropped on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why do Alchemists suck?

On a tangent...I specifically joined ENsider for alchemy options. The alchemist class didn't fit what I was looking for; no complaints--neither does the Pathfinder alchemist--I really haven't really found what I want yet. I think my basic problem is--alchemy shouldn't be a class? It's a...

D&D 5E (2014) Guns in your world, and in mine!

As a segue to the last post...this is a problem I've always had with the way D&D combat works at ranged. The attritional, gamist nature of D&D works fits with our mental picture of how fistfights, swordfights, work in real life (based more on boxing matches, and action movies than actual real...

D&D 5E (2014) Guns in your world, and in mine!

It does. Something you said earlier ". firearms want to evoke a reality check to 'prove' their contention that guns act just like more primitive weapons against medieval armours of all types." They do. Physics is physics. Kinetic energy is kinetic energy whether created by physical or...
