    D&D 5E (2014) Drizzt as a LG 8th Level Champion

Now, because I've got the bug...let's consider his 3rd edition stats.. Str: 13--this 5'4",120 pound guy is really as strong or stronger than the great mass of humanity? Uh-uh This is only where it is because you couldn't finesse scimitars in 3e. Dex: 20--Ironically this is actually functionally...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drizzt as a LG 8th Level Champion

I for one approve giving realistic stats to literary characters when I model them. The trick is to ask what stats a character absolutely need to have in order to portray them accurately in the game. So let's see...Drizzt is athletic, but also very small and light. Average human strength...

D&D 5E (2014) What should my lore bard do at 4th level?

Considering those stats are already well ahead of the expected power curve; if there is a feat you've been really hankering for, go for that. If nothing really grabs you, pick Luck If there isn't, then I'd probably use my ASI to bring my Charisma to 20 and also bump up another stat that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Class guides?

Honestly, I don't know how one would go about making a guide based on cool factor, since cool is such a subjective perception. I think swords are really cool. Others think axes are cool. Some poor benighted souls think double bladed suicide swords are cool. Some people think having a spell...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's so great about Elminster?

Last time I checked, and bear with me, that was a loooong time ago, but Khelben Blackstaff was actually more famous, ie likely to be known to the average merchant or peasant farmer, than Elminster. Someone involved with the academic community might know him as being the "Sage of Shadowdale"...

D&D 5E (2014) What single new class would you like to see?

Lemme see... An Alchemist with two subclassesP: a mage-like one who uses bombs and elixirs, and a warrior one who uses elixirs for personal mutation. Monster classes... A lycanthrope class..where your subclasses are various kinds of lycanthropes. An undead class...instead of something like...

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

What Zardnar said. Also, what you said is my point. Because a dex fighter can easily tank his strength, and pay very little penalty for it. The reverse is not true. A Strength fighter could use a bow--he wouldn't be very effective with it, but he doesn't really have any other options. A...

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

Totally reasonable, and something I bet a lot of people do at their table, but if we were to strictly limit that to throwing knives (not assuming you do, just riffing on the example you gave), then it once again advantages the dex fighter (finessable thrown weapon), because the strength fighter...

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

This, and to add insult to injury, when the pincushioned monsters finally do get within melee range, the archer can whip out their finesse weapons and be almost as much of a threat in melee as they are at range. Compare to a Strength fighter, who, having dumped Dexterity, cannot hit anything...

That's fine. I like to get in the middle and scrap as well.

No. I said exactly what I said. If it was not clear, I am happy to explain further. But thank you for you input.

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

Dex is overpowered in 5e...definitely. A big part of this is less to do with finessable weapons than with ranged combat being seriously overpowered relative to melee combat. That being said, Strength does have a few things going for it. The highest damage weapons are strength based...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighting with non-master hand

Assuming he's a fighter type, he probably trained to be deadly with either hand as a matter of course.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Revenant Subrace, Monster Hunter, and Inquisitive

I love the flavor of the monster hunter, but from a mechanical standpoint, it just seems like a battlemaster who can't do as much with his superiority dice. And the flavor easily appends itself to both the hunter ranger (who one could argue is already exactly this) and the vengeance paladin...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best Armor in D&D

Favorite fantasy armor: Depending on sex, the fur jockstrap or mail bikini. Favorite D&D armor: the one that gives me the best AC Favorite real armor: gambeson with brigandine chest and jack chains, accessorized with a good helmet and gauntlets. In a pinch, I'll settle for the good helmet and...

    Your Top 10 Fantasy Movies

Okay...lemme see. Nothing twee. Nothing modern. Nothing Science fantasy. And no magical realism. So here goes. 1. Conan the Barbarian 2. Excalibur - I could switch the one and two place very easily. For a long time Excalibur was first, but for the last decade of my life, it's been...

D&D 5E (2014) When generational differences become apparent

I tend to get annoyed at players who almost completely forego interacting with the fictional world. "I search for treasure. I roll a 20!" I get even more annoyed at the players who roll a d20, see how high it is, and then announce that that was their perception roll, what did they find...

D&D 5E (2014) When generational differences become apparent

These are generational differences, but as has been noted, there are exceptions. I played a lot of Rolemaster in the 80's because it had exactly what WOTC would later turn D&D into. Ironically, I started to see the value of the earlier way of doing things after D&D had gone the way of Rolemaster.
