D&D 5E (2014) Is the Variant Human ALWAYS better than standard human?

Assuming, for a moment that a feat is the equivalent to a +2 attribute bonus, if we assume that all points are used to create a stat of 14 or better, then on the point buy scale, Variant Human is worth 8 points for attribute bonuses, and perhaps another one for the skill bonus, for a total of 9...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is the rapier "necessary"?

I don't think a tulwar is appreciably different from a saber from any other reason, other than hilt configuration. Not all sabers or scimitars are light, not all tulwars are heavy. It's just a different word for the same weapon in different regions. So for that, perhaps let the player decide...

    Binding and Ally as rituals?

Perhaps it's because I don't see the warlocks relationship with any one power as particularly close. A warlock is a guy who makes deals with dark powers. He's not asking his primary patron to send him more power, he's making a side deal with some other denizen of the dark on a short term...

    Binding and Ally as rituals?

I don't see Warlocks as servants of dark powers. Clerics are the servants. Warlocks are the guys who make agreements with dark powers--quid pro quo, and you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours, with both sides looking to get one up on the other. So yeah, in that sense, I think Planar Binding...

D&D 5E (2014) Should GWF & Sharpshooter's "Power Attack" work with all weapons?

It's not one handed vs two handed. There's a feat for pole arms that stacks with great weapon mastery and nothing for swords or axes. So you've got, at least on the boards, a bunch of barbarians running around with weapons from the Rennaissance. If someone wants to build for it, he can make a...

D&D 5E (2014) Should GWF & Sharpshooter's "Power Attack" work with all weapons?

Agreed. It makes total sense mechanically--trade accuracy for damage, but unlike the great weapon "power attack" doesn't make a lot of sense within the fiction.

D&D 5E (2014) Should GWF & Sharpshooter's "Power Attack" work with all weapons?

Yeah, but a lot of the magic doesn't feel all that magical. Paladin smites don't really feel all that magical. The hunter ranger in our party mowing down everything further than 5 feet away doesn't feel magical. They just roll a lot of dice. I don't really like feats. I don't like...

D&D 5E (2014) Should GWF & Sharpshooter's "Power Attack" work with all weapons?

If they had kept that extra damage for Great Weapons only, I'd agree with you, but they also gave it to bows too. The bow may be 2 handed, but I'd say starting your combat 200 feet away considerably trumps having a shield. I'm about convinced that "power attacks" should be a great weapon...

D&D 5E (2014) Should GWF & Sharpshooter's "Power Attack" work with all weapons?

My logic is, the "power attack" is only half the value of a feat. A Great Weapon fighter also gets a bonus action cleave attack, which ideally is the meat and potatoes of the feat. A different feat would provide a similar new option for, say sword or axe wielders. But I have noticed the...

D&D 5E (2014) Should GWF & Sharpshooter's "Power Attack" work with all weapons?

Thanks for your input on this, it's exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. I just wanted to respond to this part...Precision with aimed spell attacks is already assumed in the rules, elsewise you wouldn't be able to crit with them.

D&D 5E (2014) Should GWF & Sharpshooter's "Power Attack" work with all weapons?

Heretofore, I've chose to run feat-less games, for all the usual reasons, as well as a couple probably idiosyncratic to me. However, I'm gearing up for a new campaign, and I'm plotting out player options, so I'm thinking about whether to allow feats in the upcoming game, with the addition of...

    D&D 5E (2014) 6-8 encounters/day - how common is this?

Actually the fighter and the barbarian are going to look about the same...each using their abilities in approximately half the combats, and having nothing to contribute other than basic attacks in the other half. This is especially the case if you run 7 encounters and 2 short rests, which is...

D&D 5E (2014) DM question: Should I take it all back?

Reading this reminds me of something that happened in my game the other night. The players wandered into the kitchen in A2 the Slavers Stockade, already trailing a bunch of hobgoblins they'd already PO'ed. It was a huge fight, and tense and fun for everybody. And it was one that could...

    D&D 5E (2014) 6-8 encounters/day - how common is this?

Personally I haven't found characters with better at-will attacks "thriving" no matter how many rounds there are in the day, because no matter how good their at will attacks were, when that was all they could do, my players (and I, when I could play) were bored silly.

    D&D 5E (2014) 6-8 encounters/day - how common is this?

Just an observation and a suggestion. Perhaps we are making too much of the "suggested 6 to 8 encounters per day" line, and not enough of the recommended encounter XP per day budget. Look at it this way...a dungeon with 8 rooms* might be considered an 8 encounter day, even though only 4 or 5...

    D&D 5E (2014) New "Fighting Style": Versatile

Personally, I'd like the duelist +2 to damage to work with versatile weapons with used in either one hand or two hands. I could see longsword wielded in two hands as offering a +1 to AC (longsword instructions stress the point that the sword is both weapon and shield. However, that's still...

D&D 5E (2014) Simple Weapons as Spellcasting Foci...

Not every staff is a quarterstaff. A quarterstaff is considerably longer, thicker, and heavier than your average walking, or wizard's staff. However, I don't really see an issue with an adventuring wizard having a particularly long, thick, and heavy wizard staff.

    D&D 5E (2014) things I changed for my game

Just a note. Athletics is the requisite skill for climbing.

    D&D 5E (2014) 6-8 encounters/day - how common is this?

I've only rarely had 6-8 encounter days. I think a good component is that I've found that 3-4 hard encounters, one of which is heavily roleplaying, makes for a better 3 to 4 hour adventure, than a 6 to 8 medium intensity fights that gradually ramp up in difficulty because the party has fewer...

DM's Guild: What Do The Customers Think?

I bought something for the first time this week-end. I got what I consider was a really good module (though not right for my table) and a set of interesting, but not particularly viable archetypes for the warlock class. One was listed as a dollar, and the other was pay as you want (in this...
