D&D 5E (2014) Why does no one play Goliath?

They're not human. Rename em Suel or Aesir or Cimmerian and I'll play them every time. Playing a man who is mighty as a bear is pretty cool. Playing a bear who is mighty as a bear is considerably less cool.

    D&D 5E (2014) Passive: It's not Just Perception - Passive Skill Checks

No passive skill checks...at lease on the players side, and that includes perception. On the other hand, the NPC's are always passive-to the extent that their roll is always 10+modifier.

D&D 5E (2014) Your Top 3 Pieces of Art in the Monster Manual

The Glabrezu, because it just dominates the page. The Kua Toa because he looks like a party guy getting pumped for a kegger The Kobold for having a more defined and manly physique than any of the men in the Player's Handbook.

D&D 5E (2014) Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

I'm to the point I'm ready to just let players assign themselves the scores they want in the stats they want, and then adjusting things to suit. Every "official" stat generation method is going to result in the same thing; players are going to rank stats from most to least important, which...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

To throw a tangent on this; even if we were to eliminate PC spellcasting, I don't think that would really make magic in D&D special. Because spellcasting isn't all the magic. Consider a typical party of WOTC recommended makeup...two dwarves, a fairy princess, a dragon, and a girl whose...

With the addendum of extending this to high level fighters and rogues as well, agreed.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Magic: Does it Feel Magical to You?

How wondrous is anything one can do consistently really? The audience applauds when the magician pulls a rabbit from his hat, but he doesn't impress himself much. He's done it a hundred times. Pretty much any kind of magic in D&D outside the realm of DM fiat is going to be more akin to...

D&D 5E (2014) Does the Eldritch Knight suck?

I found it to be pretty lacklustre. That might change with greenflame blade, but that pushes the eldritch knight in a direction I find less interesting.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Magic: Does it Feel Magical to You?

Class magic does not feel like particularly magical at all. The wizards ubiquitous fire bolt is dull as dishwater. The magic that shows up as a mcguffin in the adventure can often feel magical. The magical chalice guarded by a sphinx that the party had to recover that never empties no matter...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Has D&D, and 5e in Particular, Gone Down the Road of Ubiquitous Magic?

A few thoughts off the top of my head. 1. The complaint about Paladins and Rangers seems really overblown. They aren't all any more magical than they were in previous editions; it's just that abilities that they had were shunted over to the same spell mechanic wizards use. Rather than having...

D&D 5E (2014) Why no Proficiency bonus to AC?

I think if I use the proficiency to AC house rule, I'll modify my original and go with 10+Prof bonus. No dex added, this AC is defined as your ability to protect yourself with your combat skill. My desire was to help armored characters who are caught out of armor, and to reflect someone...

D&D 5E (2014) Why no Proficiency bonus to AC?

I like that; I admit, I lean a little more toward letting a fighter caught without armor be competitive in the AC department (while still preferring armor), so I like the 10+ part, but I think your argument is sound.

D&D 5E (2014) Why no Proficiency bonus to AC?

You know, it might be fun to add it as an alternative AC calculation. 10+Prof. Bonus+Dex A player can use that, or their unarmored defense power, or their armor, or whatever gives them the best AC. It might even make sense to limit it only to classes with full Martial weapon proficiency...

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength is agile

What athletics skill does and does not apply to in 5e, especially in areas not defined by the rules, like arm wrestling, is up to the DM to decide. I can pretty much see good arguments for either allowing it or not allowing it. But that is neither here nor there--I was just pointing out how...

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength is agile

Which is entirely sensible for things like jumping, where he's only pushing against his body weight. Strength 8 is not bad when you only weigh 80 pounds. Doesn't make a lot of sense when, say, arm wrestling.

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength is agile

Conversely, it could mean they are using their proficiency in Athletics to jump higher than their strength score would normally allow them to.

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength is agile

Pound for pound, yes they are. Which I explained in the party you didn't quote. "Sure Half-Orcs can move more mass, but the halfling is not too many pounds behind them and they are about a quarter to a fifth the size of of a half orc! (250 pound half orc to 40 to 60 pound halfling)."

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength is agile

The size/strength ratio is why the halflings are the strongest race in D&D. Sure Half-Orcs can move more mass, but the halfling is not too many pounds behind them and they are about a quarter to a fifth the size of of a half orc! (250 pound half orc to 40 to 60 pound halfling).

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength is agile

Addendum to previous post. Something that annoys me about 5e is that nearly everything associated with Dexterity in the game is a learned skill. A very dexterous person can pick up a dart for the first time and do moderately well, sure, but not nearly as well as a more mundanely dexterous...

    D&D 5E (2014) Strength is agile

D&D doesn't take physical size into account. Gymnasts tend to be fantastically strong, for their size. If adding 20 extra pounds of mass will let a competitive weightlifter lift another 10 pounds, it's a good deal. Which is why weightlifters tend to be huge. However, a gymnast has to worry...
