    D&D 5E (2014) Is Conan in 5e?

3rd edition (0 or .5) was terrible at build to concept, unless the concept was a one-trick pony who is a total master at one thing and an absolute failure at anything else. Wanna knock somebody down? Better have built your character for that since level 1 in a manner that controls all your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Conan in 5e?

Other than them nerfing unarmed combat for everyone but the monk in order to ensure some kind of niche protection, I think 5e does a better job of letting a player play Conan than any other edition so far. EDIT: probably the thing that hurts Conan the most in 5e is the de-emphasis on Strength.

    D&D 5E (2014) rapier+dagger and/or longsword+dagger?

This right here is why Basic had it going on. Short sword Normal sword Two Handed sword No frills; imagine it how you want.

    D&D 5E (2014) rapier+dagger and/or longsword+dagger?

This was my version: The Main Gauche: When holding a dagger or torch in the off-hand while attacking with a one-handed or versatile weapon in the main hand, the character has +1 to AC and rolls an extra d4 on critical hits. When used in this fashion, the dagger or torch is not considered a...

    D&D 5E (2014) rapier+dagger and/or longsword+dagger?

that's what I said, but I really like your version. Only problem is it's functionally worse than a shield since it ties up your bonus action, and provides no compensatory mechanical benefit.

    D&D 5E (2014) rapier+dagger and/or longsword+dagger?

I would definitely allow it, without requiring a feat; It's mildly, mildly more powerful than using two light weapons to dual wield, but not enough to worry about. something you might consider, since sword and dagger is fundamentally different than using two equal length weapons (the dagger is...

D&D 5E (2014) Best way to order abilities?

I regret to say it, but I prefer new school. It's just more logical. The old way only made sense in the sense of prioritizing Prime Requisites, but that justification dropped when the Paladin was introduced.

    D&D 5E (2014) Brand Vs RPG

Here's a question...do we really want more of the D&D "brand"? Do we want D&D movies, D&D TV shows, D&D lunchboxes? Do we need those things. A friend and I were talking about World of Warcraft the other day, and I said I only really learned to like WoW once I realized it wasn't a vehicle for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Brand Vs RPG

Once upon a time there was a show called Twilight Zone. Twilight Zone was not about a character, or time, or even any particular genre. It was about a mood, a twist. You could tell any story you wanted, about anyone you wanted, in any time you wanted, as long as it had that twist, that little...

What piece of media did hype kill for you?

I could have probably enjoyed the latest Mad Max film if it had been presented as just another entry in the universe, but the ongoing cries of how it was the "greatest film of 2015" and "so groundbreaking" started me looking for all the flaws; and oh my I found them.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: That Old Black Magic

I like the summoning spells (or at least the idea of them-haven't investigated the actual implementation as yet). Demon summoning is classic wizard stuff, which has never been as prominent in D&D as it is in the source material. I'm not loving the random spells aspect to the tiefling...

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] What drives your inspiration behind char gen?

A friend of mine told me an aphorism years ago that I've held dear ever since. "A character's background should never be more exciting than the adventure they're about to go on."

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] What drives your inspiration behind char gen?

Honestly...swords. Swords pretty much define all my character concepts.

Sword Coast Legends Survey; Plus Ranger Feedback Results!

Many thanks. I may have to sit down and write that one out. Because with Sword Coast Legends, it was like they actively trying to drive me away from playing it. Heck...that's pretty much the way I feel about most of their marketing.

Sword Coast Legends Survey; Plus Ranger Feedback Results!

On the Sword Coast Legends part, do they have anything for "I didn't buy the game, and here's why?"

    D&D 5E (2014) Question about Rogues

It does open up some otherwise non-optimal multiclassing opportunities that could be potentially overpowered--like the barbarian/rogue or a rogue with 2 levels of fighter and great weapon specialization who rerolls all his sneak attack dice on a 1 or a 2, but those characters aren't...

D&D 5E (2014) Barbarians: Why Rage per Day?

Ironically, once per short rest is actually considerably more use limited than the current generous allowance of daily rages. It may depend on how short rests work out in play at ones individual table, but taking an hour in the middle of an adventure is rarely an optimal decision, so players...

D&D 5E (2014) Breaking down the Fighter archetypes.

I personally see the Champion as the "Basic" and the Battlemaster as the "Advanced" version of the same thing; the tough as nails, expert with all weapons and none, warrior par excellence. It's not that either of these subclasses really does anything different from the other-it's just a...

D&D 5E (2014) Escapist article on SCAG is Brutal.

The map that accompanies the review is gorgeous. First nice thing I've said about 5e's art; but man, that's a nice looking map.

    D&D 5E (2014) Bard's Powers

Another option, if you're doing fewer encounters, is use bigger encounters. The math is 6 or so medium to hard encounters. Change the metric to 3 to 4 hard to deadly encounters and it works out okay.
