D&D 5E (2014) I Am SO Over The "Rootless Vagabond" Archetype

Gotta admit, I still love the "rootless vagabond" archetype. I'm a little bored with the "badass loner" though, because it's really not all that fun to play. But another way to say "rootless vagabond" is "itinerant hero" or "knight errant", the guy who goes where he's needed and saves...

    D&D 5E (2014) Likes and Dislikes?

Likes: bounded accuracy, the way spells work, the way that almost everything I might want to do, I can just do, without having to jump through 37 hoops to make a character and not a "build". Dislikes: Archer specialization getting an accuracy boost so they can hit more accurately than melees...

    D&D 5E (2014) Silly/Senseless Rules You Have Found

Silliest rule that I've found is that archery specialization for fighters and rangers gives a bonus to hit. So apparently, with a little bit of training, it's easier to hit someone a hundred feet away than it is to hit them in melee. This is one of those things that's going to annoy me for...

D&D 5E (2014) No Armor: Addiing Proficiency to AC

I really like the thought behind this idea, but it seems to place too much emphasis on a favorable dexterity score. It just doesn't seem logical to me that every PC in a Modern game is an Olympic gymnast or the Cisco Kid. Also, it re-aligns who gets the higher AC's in the game. Warrior types...

D&D 5E (2014) Humans, am I missing something? And what's up with half-elf skill bonus?

The somewhat frustrating thing is that the races that are supposed to be rare, all seem to have the best overall bonuses. Sure, humans are lackluster (even the variant human, in my opinion), but they're not that that outshined by the elf, the dwarf, or the halfling. But when you start looking...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the 5e Monster Manual the best MM ever?

Why would I be offended by nudity or violence?

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual - What pictures really stood out, or changed your view on a monster?

If abomination equals genocide, then no. But the art, or more accurately, the art direction, was at least as bad as Justin Beiber, and for pretty much the same reasons. The PHB had some competent artists working on it, I checked out some of their work elsewhere and found them perfectly capable...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the 5e Monster Manual the best MM ever?

I too found the PHB to be downright awful, bordering on offensive, but the art in the MM was way better.

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual - What pictures really stood out, or changed your view on a monster?

After the abomination that was the Players' Handbook, I'll admit I wasn't expecting much, but I just got my Monster Manual today, and man was I blown away. Until I got to the Cambion, but then, you can't get them all right. I'd say the various demons and devils that got me the most excited.

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster, Conan, Krull adventure

Unless we get some serious new direction, I doubt this is something we're gonna see from Wizards of the Coast. Based on what we've seen before, they seem kind of ashamed of D&D's history in old school pulp, if not outright contemptuous. Hopefully licensing will allow third party publishers...

    D&D 5E (2014) check it out honkies!

Did you really title your thread with a racial slur? Not cool.

D&D 5E (2014) If the art in the PHB and MM is any indication...

EDIT: removed because it was needlessly negative. Here's hoping the DMG art blows us all away.

    D&D 5E (2014) Anyone started a custome campaign yet?

I'm working on developing my Dying Earth style world for the system, but I'm vacillating between starting that and something more traditionally D&D, since I need to develop beastmen, immortals, and undead as PC races, possibly a technologist class, and some other stuff, as well as put together...

D&D 5E (2014) Your wishlist for fantasy adventure beyond medieval Europe

The smear of Empires and Kingdoms that dotted the world and contended prior to the rise of the Roman Empire, where Babylon, Egypt, Greece, the Trojans, Assyrians, Thracians, Warring States Chinese, and whoever else I want to throw in there, even if they were separated by hundreds or thousands of...

D&D 5E (2014) Your wishlist for fantasy adventure beyond medieval Europe

OK; I've just gotten the sense that people have this idea that D&D is all fantasy medieval Europe all the time, which has never been the case. In addition to having monsters from nearly every portion of the Earth, Greyhawk contained countries emulations of nearly every culture on Earth too, and...

D&D 5E (2014) Your wishlist for fantasy adventure beyond medieval Europe

I don't really see anything in 5e that stops it from being used now for medieval Japan (with magic), medieval China (with magic), Ancient Rome (with magic), or any other culture where the primary method of cutting down ones enemies is with something involving muscle (and magic). There are some...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e as an universal gaming engine ?

I think it could do fine. Look at what has been done with Microlite D20. What I'd do is go for broader, more archetypal classes, like the "Warrior", "Expert", and "Adept" of True20, and more generic abilities. Then bolt on setting specific rules onto the core mechanics. The primary thing...

D&D 5E (2014) Your wishlist for fantasy adventure beyond medieval Europe

One thing I would like is a technologist class, for post apocalyptic fantasy (my game world is a Dying Earth world).
