    D&D 5E (2014) Why D&D is not (just) Tolkien

My gosh, I just came back because I remembered I forgot to mention Burroughs. Heck, the very name "Fighting Man", the term one handed "longsword", white apes, pretty much the entire idea of second world fantasy. Not to mention that every bit of 20th century pop culture owes its genesis to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why D&D is not (just) Tolkien

D&D would still have dwarves and elves, though dwarves might be written dwarfs. While D&D dwarves look a lot like Tolkien's dwarves, that's because both draw from the same well...Northern European mythology but D&D elves are nothing like the Tolkien's elves. For one thing...Tolkien's elves are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why D&D is not (just) Tolkien

Honestly, the more one reads the earlier, pre-Tolkien pastiche explosion fantasy, the less Tolkien feels like the progenitor of D&D. And that's the best part of these discussions, it gives us the opportunity to promote the works of Poul Anderson (probably the single greatest influence on D&D...

    D&D 5E (2014) Group Rule Deal-Breakers

All nonhuman campaigns. 3e/PF games with all the dials turned to the right. I want to spend more time playing than building by character, or be told, I can't do this or that cool thing, because I haven't taken the right combination of feats/class abilities. Games where we're all kids. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dragon #1 GenCon Update

According this interview with Tim Kask, the "landshark" name did come from SNL, the design from the toy, and their diet from a need to threaten adventurers horses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPepszyjh3g

Xanathar's War Mage is Gandalf, Dr Strange, and Elric

I'm a little confused...he mentions three characters who are about as different as it's possible to be from each other, and then says this one class can represent all three. But it doesn't have any ability to use weapons, which is a signature feature of one, and a pretty darn major aspect of...

    Who Needs Iconics Anyway?

The Regdar thing isn't to anyone's credit. It was plain insulting.

    D&D 5E (2014) Charisma- Good ability ... or OMNIVOROUS DESTROYER OF D&D?

In 1e, Charisma was the God stat. Who cares that Strength let you add 3 to your damage, when charisma let you go into a dungeon with 8 other dudes who would die for you!

    D&D 5E (2014) What non-combat abilities should fighters have?

I would like that, however I don't know if that would really be enough for most people who feel the fighter class doesn't stand out outside of combat (Personally I don't think the fighter stands out in combat either...but that's another kettle of fish). The fighter is still overshadowed by...

    D&D 5E (2014) What non-combat abilities should fighters have?

The name Fighter only exists because it became declasse to call him a fighting man. It has no place, no story. So change his name...call him a Warrior. Now ask yourself, what should warriors be good at? Perception. There's a reason drill sergeants beat "Stay alert! Stay alive!" into their...

D&D 5E (2014) Are You Planning on Subscribing to D&D Beyond

Not since the early marketing. I didn't have time to engage in the beta test. If they're promising to delivery an open ended, really house rule friendly product...like, I mean importing Rolemaster style crit charts if that's what I want to do, then naturally I'll be all in; I'm just not gonna...

D&D 5E (2014) Are You Planning on Subscribing to D&D Beyond

The biggest problem with digital tools is it encourages "by the book" gameplaying. Assuming the system was really house rule friendly, I could definitely see it. But since I like to hack and kit-bash, I doubt the on-line tools are for me.

WTF is "cold iron", and why's it so special?

was just coming here to post that link. It's some great background information.

    D&D 5E (2014) Are you a cat person?

Not really concerned about Tolkien; D&D isn't LOTR, it's Howard, Leiber, de Camp and Pratt, Anderson, and Vance. (insert caveat that D&D is really about whatever you want it to be...and the more your imagination ranges from the modern "House Style" the better your games will be). Tabaxi are...

D&D 5E (2014) Guns in your world, and in mine!

Saw this first on my phone and thought I was giving XP...but apparently I "laughed". No disrespect intended; I meant to XP. This is awesome, and I will check your Barsoom rules out. Glad to hear people are still bringing the old school to D&D.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

More and more I'm leaning to just letting the PC's have whatever stats they want what fits their characters. Even all 18's doesn't really skew the challenge all that much.

D&D 5E (2014) Are You Excited about Tomb of Annihilation?

This reminds me of Marvel's Earth X stories, or Steven King's Dark Tower series; big involved, stories that involve deep knowledge of previous canon. That's not a bad thing, and thanks to their opening up of previous editions content, all that old canon is available.

D&D 5E (2014) The new D&D Reading List- WIKI THREAD!

This is a great topic; and an interesting tension whether to recommend thing you like, or things that you think will improve one's understanding or be applicable to your D&D game? For direct applicability: First off...pretty much everything on the original Appendix N, with special emphasis on...

What's the connection between heavy metal and early roleplaying?

There was a bit of discomfort for kids like me in that, thanks to the Satanic Panic, both D&D and Metal started attracting people who were interested in actual Satanism. Fortunately they were usually fairly easy to spot.
