D&D 5E (2014) What would you miss about 5E if you were playing AD&D?

I don't fail to take into account THAC0; 1e fighters will often be sporting higher AC's than their 1e brethren. But that's focussing too closely on the Ogre. The 1e Ogre was intended to be a tough fight for a group of 1st level characters; in 5e it's intended as a pushover for a group of 1st...

D&D 5E (2014) What would you miss about 5E if you were playing AD&D?

I didn't say the numbers weren't bigger, I said they weren't actually putting out more damage...because in all that damage they are doing, they are matching it against correspondingly larger numbers of hit points. The disparity gets even larger as you go up in level, with mooks sporting 100...

D&D 5E (2014) What would you miss about 5E if you were playing AD&D?

Modern characters don't actually do more damage than than earlier edition characters. They put up larger numbers, but they are attacking larger pools of hit points. And many of those cool resources they can expend to up their damage sky high wouldn't even be necessary except to deal with the...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls “…it’s now obvious how to live without Bonus Actions”' And 6th Edition When Players Ask

Interesting thought... One could actually tie this in with a modified form of the initiative system Mearls debuted. Each action has an initiative die associated with it, and you determine all the actions you want to take in a round, and then roll those dice. For extra complication, you could...

What's the connection between heavy metal and early roleplaying?

I think it's more a juxtaposition of themes than direct links. Heavy metal delved deep into fantasy imagery at the time, with Frazetta and Vallejo gracing album covers, and songs were often written around themes derived from many of the same books that inspired Dungeons & Dragons. Michael...

D&D 5E (2014) What would you miss about 5E if you were playing AD&D?

Some things I wouldn't miss. Hit Point bloat Short Rests Expected Encounters Per Day

D&D 5E (2014) What would you miss about 5E if you were playing AD&D?

Sensible grappling rules. A fairly intuitive resolution system (even if I think the math is off). 6 second rounds 1st level thieves that can actually do their jobs.

Simply D&D--based on the My Little Pony system.

    Sounds like Microlite20.

D&D 5E (2014) Scared Cow: magic Weapon & Armor plusses

Personally, I would miss the heck out of the +1 sword. It's one of the things that says I'm playing D&D. Like fireballs, ubiquitous healing potions, and useless fighters, it just wouldn't be the same game without them.

    D&D 5E (2014) Two-Weapon Fighting alteration

Anyone, and yes, it can stack with the feat. The aim is to add some flexibility and some simulation to what an off-hand weapon is for--ie deflection and opportunistically stabbing those you missed with your main attack.

    D&D 5E (2014) Two-Weapon Fighting alteration

The only alteration I've made to two-weapon fighting is that any object in the off-hand, like a cloak, a torch or a dagger, can be used as an improvised shield for +1 AC, whenever the off-hand object is not used for attack. I've considered changing the off-hand attack to only happen when the...

D&D 5E (2014) My dwarf fighter is always last into combat?

Definitely look at throwing weapons-makes sense from a mechanical and a storytelling perspective. If you are 5th level or over, talk over with your DM about relaxing the weapon drawing rules to allow you your full attack progression (expect for the monsters to get the same courtesy). I think...

    D&D 5E (2014) Barbarian build at level 6

I would just assume the barbarian studied under Meyer*. (Juaquim Meyer wrote a rapier manual for "German" rapier, a very aggressive style, which involves lots of cutting, and the guards and blows share names with longsword, and the first cut is called the "brain blow")

    D&D 5E (2014) True20 Classes for 5e

Wow, was just thinking this week about translating True20 to 5e math. Definitely interested in this. will try to follow along and give some constructive feedback.

    D&D 5E (2014) I hate rapiers. Do you?

If it helps, bronze age thrusting swords are referred to as rapiers by historians/archaalogists, and they have about as much to do with Renaissance rapier as the arquebus has with an M-16. And the rapier does show up in the hands of the occasional foppish nobleman in Conan stories. Likewise...

    D&D 5E (2014) I hate rapiers. Do you?

I like rapiers and own several, but I too think they are too prominent in 5e. This has less to do with rapiers of course than with the power a dexterity based character build has in the game.

D&D 5E (2014) How much Warlord do you want?

If I were going to do a spin-off 5e Fantasy Heartbreaker that's probably what I would do; with at most 3 or 4 classes--basically True20 with 5e's math.

D&D 5E (2014) How much Warlord do you want?

I'm really not...I'm describing what is an end point of a career as a fighting man. As to the latter part, I mostly agree, except I dislike sequestering interesting development opportunities inside class roles, instead of opening them up in the game rules themselves.
