    D&D 5E (2014) [Warlords] Should D&D be tied to D&D Worlds?

Ah! Now that does resonate and is a non-magical version of Bless :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Joke Material Components

Indeed, which is why--if they're already inline with the spell descriptions--it makes more sense to leave them there and sidebar the rule to ignore them, rather than go through every affected spell and move them into their own section. Either that or: $ sed -n '/^Components.*/!p' next.txt...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Warlords] Should D&D be tied to D&D Worlds?

Given that Gandalf is a Maiar and thus a minor god: Clerical magic. This is an interesting point and passionately argued but I still don't see how it relates to the warlord class and this longing for an inspirational healing class. It's also very interesting that you mention RuneQuest, which...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Warlords] Should D&D be tied to D&D Worlds?

Aaand... it's at this point I've decided to make my grand entrance! I've followed this thread with some interest and regard myself as being neutral on the subject. I've never played 4e and although I like Pathfinder I'm no 3e fanboy. With that in mind: I'm not entirely sure I can, no. The...

Season of Sexism #2: The Fake Geek Girl; plus Origins Award Winners, and Red Aegis' designer dream t

I think you've misconstrued what I meant, which was that I know geek girls but they always have "traditionally female" interests in addition to the genre stuff. I'm unsure whether or not that supports your earlier assertion that "most geek girls tend to limit the scope of their geekiness more...

Season of Sexism #2: The Fake Geek Girl; plus Origins Award Winners, and Red Aegis' designer dream t

Then apparently I'm not a geek, seeing as I've never played Portal?

    D&D 5E (2014) Joke Material Components

But they're apparently devoting this time to material components so it's kind of moot. People can come up with their own, or use the ones provided, or ignore the whole system. Everybody wins. Yay!

Season of Sexism #2: The Fake Geek Girl; plus Origins Award Winners, and Red Aegis' designer dream t

And every geek girl I've ever known still had an unhealthy obsession with shoes that puts my obsessions to shame. Purely on that basis they out-geek me.

What is the downside to simple systems?

I've just seen this article at Roleplayers Chronicle, which is somewhat relevant: Rock Crushes Scissors: A Return to Basics

    Tracey Alley - plagiarist

One possibly interesting fact in all the scorn being poured on Ms. Alley (given the recent discussions about sexism) is that she doesn't appear to have received any threats to her personal well being, unlike some other women being savaged by the genre crowd. I hasten to add: that's a good thing!

What is the downside to simple systems?

Could be but isn't! I'd say the last edition (4th?) is probably the most complex rpg I've ever read. You're welcome. I have maybe ten of the original gamebooks plus Steve Jackson's Sorcery! series, which introduced a magic system. The basic system itself is a mind-numbingly simple 2d6 mechanic...

    Tracey Alley - plagiarist

Firstly, that's factually incorrect but I digress. As far as I can ascertain this author has written original stories that are entirely her own work (according to her, at least. I've never heard of her before this all kicked off). Assuming she's being honest about that then these stories are...

    Tracey Alley - plagiarist

There's a (possibly not universal) restriction on posting links until a forum member has posted 10 times. I ran into something similar myself a few months ago.

What is the downside to simple systems?

I think it's difficult to evaluate rules on the basis of relative fun-ness, as this will vary from player to player. Also, the utility of any two rules that achieve the same result (i.e. is the trap avoided or not) is equivalent. Having said that, given the topic of the thread relates to...

What is the downside to simple systems?

Yes and no. GURPS does a pretty good job of being a universal system to about the same level of detail as, say, some version of Dungeons & Dragons. The Fighting Fantasy system I referred to earlier, whilst written primarily for the fantasy genre, was applied to horror, science-fiction...

What is the downside to simple systems?

I agree. I'm reminded here of the Fighting Fantasy system, originally developed for the gamebooks but also issued as a standalone RPG system in its own right. It was essentially a cut down version of Tunnels and Trolls (which is/was itself a simple game). Characters had a Luck attribute that...

What is the downside to simple systems?

Perhaps not more rules. It does need fewer chutes and more snakes, however, IMHO ;)

I was just about to edit my post to say exactly this.

    D&D 5E (2014) Joke Material Components

To be fair, if the DM insists on using material components then the player either has to accept that or decide not to play. I agree in principle that a more generic rule set that nonetheless provides the option of MCs would make for a better, general purpose (and, dare I say it, modular)...
