D&D 5E (2014) Should the next edition of D&D promote more equality?

My understanding of events is that a certain amount of art (including the depiction of harpies and succubi, the removal of demons and devils, etc) was changed between 1st and 2nd edition AD&D in part because of "moral objection" to their inclusion in a game perceived, rightly or wrongly, for...

D&D 5E (2014) Should the next edition of D&D promote more equality?

Has this ever been the opinion of anyone posting in this thread? I admit, due to it's length, I've dipped in and out and may have missed something but isn't the "request" to include more variation in ethnicity not the total removal of another?

    Games In A Museum?

Given that the TED talk video emphasised the difference between 'Art' and 'Design' it would be interesting (to me, at least!) to discuss design in RPGs too. Discounting for the moment the possibly semantic differences between wargames and RPGs, ASL could* be considered a good design of tactical...

    Games In A Museum?

I'm reminded here of The Cumberland Pencil Museum, which isn't as ridiculous as it sounds... I'd never really thought about it from that perspective before. That's a really good analogy :) Seeing as how RPGs are part of social history they certainly deserve to be preserved somewhere along...

Gamehackery: What Does the Subscription Boom Mean to Gamers?

I completely agree, indeed I essentially said it was an opinion! The view of the OGL I put forward there was based on a bunch of websites I'd read and certainly wasn't intended to be authoritative. :)

Gamehackery: What Does the Subscription Boom Mean to Gamers?

I would say no. I would also argue that your SNES is a product. The games were supplied on cartridges and it had no networking capability. The experience of playing the game and the media/device used to deliver that experience were intrinsically linked back in 1987 in a way that isn't true of...

Gamehackery: What Does the Subscription Boom Mean to Gamers?

Of course, Microsoft would claim your wife hadn't bought the games by buying the hardware and the operating system--she'd just bought the hardware and the operating system. She hadn't paid for the games, she'd just been given the free programs allowing her to play the games if she wanted to buy...

Any low fantasy games out there? Need a change of pace!

Apart from the level limit this sounds pretty much like Mongoose's Conan d20 game, mentioned before. Of course, that's a sword & sorcery setting rather than medieval but Aquilonia is essentially medieval Europe in disguise.

Sell me on: Warhammer 40K RPG

Yeah, this is likely the way I would go. The WH40K universe is so bombastic I imagine a pulp-y system would work quite well.

    Percentile Systems? Just Say No!

Then I evidently did miss your point, for which I apologise. Please clarify it for me and I'll address it.

    Gamehackery: Microtransactions for RPGs

    That actually seems reasonable.

    Percentile Systems? Just Say No!

I suspect your point is that you want me to admit a dGoogle mechanic is a terrible idea. I further suspect that if I were to do this you would then say something along the lines of "A-ha! So if a dGoogle mechanic is bad you must surely admit that a d% system could be bad too?" thereby helping...

    Gamehackery: Microtransactions for RPGs

I think this is the crux of the matter. Your posts regarding micro-transactions and subscriptions have prompted me to wonder how they might work in the context of RPGs. Try as I might I've yet to come up with anything that's plausible, mostly because players would either ignore the paywall and...

    Gamehackery: Microtransactions for RPGs

You snuck in whilst I was writing my comment but I very nearly made a joke about releasing the Monster Manual as individual pages/cards, Pokemon-stylee!

    Gamehackery: Microtransactions for RPGs

Isn't there a DnD iPad app coming soon? The micro-transaction Czar might have been employed in relation to that. Still, M-Ts and subscriptions are likely to be things a company the size of WotC will try out elsewhere. I'm not sure they'll work--other than in relation to the ways they're...

Pretty Darn Fun (a look at new PDFs)

When I read this page the other day I somehow totally missed that it's free! I'm not sure I'll ever use it as-is (which is probably why I missed the price; I doubt I'd buy it, so glossed over it) but as an ideas resource it's a bargain :) I second Lindeloef's praise for the page, thanks

    Percentile Systems? Just Say No!

Actually I deliberately paid attention to your original argument, which I disagree with because I believe it confounds an opinion with a fact. I also believe the reason you give for this argument (vis-a-vis false precision) does not take into account other reasons that may exist for using a...

Help me find the right game!

I like Traveller but I've never really stuck to the default setting. There are lots of compatible settings and supplements though. Starblazer Adventures is kinda fun too. It's Fudge/FATE based and adaptable to pretty much any style of Sci-Fi setting. There aren't that many published setting for...

    Percentile Systems? Just Say No!

I'm interested in an RPG system that uses bananas for task resolution. Or puppies. Look, the point I'm making is that I disagree with your original argument, "that any percentile rpg ever designed would be better once converted to d20, d10, 2d6, or some other system using smaller numbers." The...

    Percentile Systems? Just Say No!

Or even "do you prefer System X that uses a d20 mechanic or System Y that uses a d% mechanic?" That question certainly is subjective. Consequently, neither system is objectively better than the other. It is purely a matter of personal preference. I suppose I could have added the caveat in my...
