D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

Early on, that was probably true, but for most of the people still playing PF, I doubt it. Those unhappy with WotC were just as likely to get unhappy with Paizo and move on to something else again. I can see a lot of people supporting both, but I just don't see a lot of people abandoning PF...

D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

And people who think that really matters to Paizo, or anyone else, in the long run are fooling themselves. Paizo will continue to battle for #1 just like it did during the time that 4E and Essentials was being produced. It won't be #1 every quarter, but neither will 5E. Paizo will continue to...

D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

What you call a grudge, others call filling an interest that WotC chose not to worry about any longer. I suspect that at this point, most PF players could care less about WotC one way or another. If WotC produces a system different enough to be worth paying attention to while still being...

D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

I don't think you give nearly enough credit to Paizo. WotC certainly helped them out a lot by faltering, but Paizo still had to make sure to take certain steps to take full advantage of the opening. Paizo today is quite strong and would probably have a very different experience vs the numbers...

D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

I fully expect them to shoot up to #1 initially, and for a short time after release, but they won't automatically stay there just because they are suddenly publishing books again. I expect that the long term pattern will be them going back and forth with Paizo between #1 and #2 as each goes...

D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

I disagree. The name used to be enough to get automatic sales within the community itself, but not anymore, meaning that more people already in the hobby are willing to play something else, and most new players don't just appear, they are recruited by existing players (or in the times that good...

D&D 5E (2014) Given WotC plans with the RPG will 5e always be the #1 seller?

After looking at what's out there already, I don't really see 5E being overwhelmingly #1 consistently. The D&D brand as a whole may well be, if they can actually get the multimedia stuff to finally take off (something which, quite frankly, I'll believe it when I see it, given that both WotC and...

Pathfinder 1E IF Paizo was planning a Pathfinder 2.0 what signs would we see?

I am sure that eventually we will see a product that is branded Pathfinder 2.0 or something similar. It won't likely be anything new, however, as much as it is far more likely to be a product that looks at all the new material released for Pathfinder, works the best of it into the core rules...

    D&D 5E (2014) Atheism/Agnosticism in 5e?

I would say that it would be near impossible for a character in a typical fantasy world to deny the existence of supernatural, extraplanar, and similar beings. Even LoTR has enough elements of that kind of thing that most characters in that world would understand that something else is out...

    General Discussion

Greetings, I am able to return from the land of the overwhelmed at least a little bit. While my brain is still not yet capable of DMing mode, I can get into one pbp game without trouble, so if you need one of them to flesh out a party, let me know, and I can get them ready to go in no time.

    Upcoming Adventure Review

I'll think on it, and see if an idea pops into my head. I don't want to commit to too much right now, but life is calm enough I could probably fit in one game if I can think of something.

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

The OGL is the only reason we're still seriously talking about the brand after WotC's last flagship product flopped. Without the OGL, WotC would be looking an awful lot like White Wolf after the nWoD debacle. With it, they still have a reasonably large group of people who still follow the...

    D&D 5E (2014) The cost of D&D 5E (it ain't so bad!)

It had all but run it's course anyway even before the last announcement, so no real surprise at all. If anything the announcement kept it alive for an extra few days.

The announcement is a good start, only time will tell if they can build on it.

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

As soon as they figure that out and how to leverage that, the brand will be a true monster, and people will realize that the OGL, and the fights around it, is really of no concern. The rules are useless without a world and characters to express them.

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

The key is that the change has had both positive and negative impacts. The OSR probably wouldn't have happened without the OGL, but Pathfinder and OSR are a big part of what kept WotC in the conversation in the last few years when WotC's own product, 4E, was flailing about in comparative...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

For the most part I'm inclined to agree with this, and for all that some don't care for it, I don't think it really hurt anybody that much in the long run the last go around. 4E, Pathfinder, and all the other participants ultimately failed or succeeded on their own merits, not on how loud one...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

To be fair to the OGL, though, all those are at least under the same general umbrella. Without the OGL, the D&D fanbase might not simply be fractured, it would most likely simply be gone. For example, White Wolf and WoD were all over the place until the debacle with nWoD, and now they have...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Level of success matters a lot. 25% of what Paizo achieved would not support enough of a fan base to stand up to what WotC could bring with 4E's release; the effort would have withered on the vine due to lack of fan support without WotC having to do all that much. Paizo succeeded because of a...

    D&D 5E (2014) The cost of D&D 5E (it ain't so bad!)

Most systems aren't charging $50 for just 1/3 of the core game either, or $30 for an adventure. Even after Amazon's discounts, a lot of systems don't even begin to approach the price of what they would pay for these books. Granted, quality and quantity are not as high with most systems, but for...
