D&D 5E (2014) Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

Well just because he can't see this, doesn't mean anyone else can't. I wholeheartedly hope people read these posts and decide to continue the discussion instead of closing it down, regardless of whatever ill feelings may have illogically spawned from certain posts.

D&D 5E (2014) Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

I don't think you understand what a troll is because I am certainly not one. In fact, by pointedly ignoring the rest of my post which does talk about the medicine skill and its uses outside of combat scenarios (which most skills are based on) you have more pointed out that you are the troll...

D&D 5E (2014) Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

You're missing my point as well. I'm talking about the 3 tentpoles of 5e, namely, Combat, Exploration and Roleplaying (perhaps not in those specific words). Many of the rules and character options in this edition focus on only one of those, and skills typically do not even touch combat. All of...

D&D 5E (2014) Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?358422-Medicine-Skill-usefulness&highlight=medicine There's another one by Morrus that for some reason it wouldn't let me click on that talked about what you can use medicine for too. I sincerely doubt 2/3 of the game is "fluff". Say you're trying...

D&D 5E (2014) Where is the point of medicine as a skill?

As has been said in other threads of this nature (of which there are several) the medicine skill can be used more than just strictly mechanically in a fight. It can be used to diagnose a disease, do some epidemiology on a local town, figure out how someone died, figure out an antidote for a...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else feel individual initiative is more trouble than it's worth?

Since I do one roll for all the monsters, usually I write it down and whoever beats the monsters gets a free action to do what they want, then the monsters go, then you just start alternating players and monsters. So initiative still matters a lot, but doesn't bog anything down.

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Beastmaster

It doesn't say so in as many words. The interpretation most people responding seem to favor is that the beast becomes a robot once it becomes your companion, but the rules only say "On your turn, you can (emphasis mine) verbally command the beast where to move (no action required by you)." I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Use Rope

I agree with pretty much all of this except one thing: making the strength DC higher. Being able to tie cool knots in the rope isn't making the rope itself any stronger, and a DC17 is actually pretty high for 5E, falling between medium and hard. An average human would have a 3/20 chance of being...

    D&D 5E (2014) Use Rope

Um, nope. A strict reading of that doesn't even have the word proficiency in it, so not sure how you extrapolated that from that sentence. It seems clear enough that if you lack a tool to do something specific you can't do it, i.e. you can't craft or repair an item without a hammer, and you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Meld into Stone - easy long rests mid-dungeon?

Depending on the party size it'll take him about 40 minutes to cast it, ample time for a monster or two to come on in and attack a weakened party. As a DM if this was constantly abused, I would also have a bunch of monsters set up shop right outside the wall, not knowing that there were...

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Beastmaster

Sure I do, but not very often, and they don't have much AoE stuff anyway. My thoughts on that are thus: 1. AoE spells aren't often used in conjunction with a group of enemies. Typically the animal companion is going to be front line, attacking up close and personal. If a wizard has guards and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

Fortunately that's not my only point but I understand what you guys are saying. My response was solely based on a single post, and was actually a question that wasn't answered. I think my problem is that of faith: I believe that with thousands of hours of playtesting, the designers understood...

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E's "signature line" be?

4e to me was about combat and balance and everything they could do to make it more interesting and varied. I believe it would have been excellent if they had marketed it as a D&D Tactics instead of plain D&D. 5e... I mean, we can't really be sure yet, can we? I feel like everything points...

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Beastmaster

The tiger shouldn't get killed every other fight, and as a DM I'm not sure how it would. If you have a bunch of impartial monsters, I don't see how they would decide to attack the tiger over attacking the massive barbarian, plate wearing fighter/paladin, or the fireball casting wizard. In all...

    D&D 5E (2014) 2-Hander Style and Extra Dice

Edit: after reading some of the other posts in this thread I change my opinion. Soun like its. A reasonable option to let them do it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

My response was originally to epochrpg's post in which he stated that a ranger's companion should be durable. The only way to get that sort of idea is if that had been the case in the past, otherwise we wouldn't have any notion of what animal companions should be like. Therefore, I responded by...

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Beastmaster

So having recently become fairly active on these boards, I realize that this topic has been talked about a lot. However, it is generally in a disparaging way towards the beastmaster class, rather than a productive way. So with that note, I decided to do a little defense for them, and figure out...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

So this goes back to what I was arguing before: Which edition's example do you go back to in order to replace this one's class feature? In epochrpg's comment, the same thing would apply for every edition's animal companion. They have always been weak to the point of death by fireball, and this...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

So having the same hp as a wizard and being able to hit as well as a fighter is a bad thing? If the imp has a +4 bonus and a level 10 wolf has a +8bonus, they will be able to hit something almost twice as often as the imp. Not a small bonus by any means, as well as the fact that the wolf will be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

Uh, in no world is the Imp with pact of the chain better than the animal companion We've already established via twitter with Mearles that the wolf can do things for self preservation if it calls for it, i.e. it doesn't just stand there and take hits until it dies. An Imp has a lower AC (13 v 15...
