    D&D 5E (2014) High level characters: A one off

True enough on your points, but there's a couple of things I want to address: I want to burn this notion into the ground. My players don't play to optimize, they play to play what they want. I let them pick anything, and if that happens to be five rogues, then they deal with that. I don't...

    D&D 5E (2014) High level characters: A one off

Recently, for my friend's father's birthday, he asked if I could DM for them for a 12 hour stretch all day. Of course I agreed, but my dad wanted to play his 16th level wizard he has been playing on and off for over three decades. Thinking about how everyone says D&D is typically broken at high...

    D&D 5E (2014) Replacement for Aboleth?

Level them up. A single Aboleth is a "Hard" but not "Deadly" encounter for 6 level 4 characters. CR can be very misleading, but EXP is not.

    D&D 5E (2014) Those poor farmers!

None of those things are something that needs an explanation. If you really need to know what an Abbey is, or an Outpost, or a Temple, look it up in Wikipedia. If you want something that's massively in depth, and details how many floors, how many square feet, what can be put inside, etc. for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Should I Allow Feats

Simplest solution: Stop using experience points. In my 10 years of DMing, I've only used experience points once and that was in the Starter Set of 5E. Experience points have never been that important to my group, just the act of leveling has, and I reward them by milestone. So, if they complete...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Should I Allow Feats

I'm assuming you're talking about using the Mordenkainen spells to make 5 minute workdays? i.e. Fight a monster, cast Mordenkainen's Mansion, rest, fight a monster the next day, cast Mordenkainen... etc. That's all well and good, but it takes 1 minute to cast Magnificent Mansion, plenty of time...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Should I Allow Feats

I don't believe this is true. As I said in my post, it just takes a bit to get used to, but I've found it far easier to challenge players than when we played Pathfinder. Also, Bounded accuracy technically has nothing to do with min/maxers. All bounded accuracy does is make lower level creatures...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Should I Allow Feats

I was having this same problem until recently, and it all came down to finding a monster that was able to stack up against the PCs well. All my PCs are level 11, and there are 6 of them, so finding something that could be difficult to them at all was rather hard to do. I had thrown all manner of...

Board Games with "D&D feel" for kids

Small World is pretty excellent, as well as Lords of Waterdeep, although those are both a little bit more large scale. Descent is the ultimate dungeon crawling boardgame, and I've found is much more accessible and just plain fun than the 4E board games like Castle Ravenloft. Munchkin is a great...

    D&D 5E (2014) On Dungeon Design

How did the actual session go?

    D&D 5E (2014) On Dungeon Design

Recently, I've been having a problem. I'm currently a grad student working on getting into medical school, and I love D&D. I have been playing for a little over a decade, starting with my dad's old AD&D books and moving onto 3.5 and 4e, but I've never really felt exceptionally passionate about...

    D&D 3.x The DMG: A CRITICAL HIT at 93.5%!

This seems.... weird. How can you be burned out on a game you haven't played? The books are just a tool to get you through the stories and adventure with a modicum of framework. If you're getting burnt out on just reading the books, I think you may be getting burned out on RPGs in general.

Dear lord, people actually WANT THAC0???

    D&D 3.x The DMG: A CRITICAL HIT at 93.5%!

Also, a 5/5 doesn't mean perfect and never has. It's simply the highest recommendation a reviewer can give.

    D&D 3.x The DMG: A CRITICAL HIT at 93.5%!

Speaking as a DM who is now experienced but used to be inexperienced, if the DMs guide I had originally read (3e) had not contained the worldbuilding things that it did, I likely wouldn't have continued DMing, as I had little access to such materials except that one book. Every edition is...

    D&D 3.x The DMG: A CRITICAL HIT at 93.5%!

What were they supposed to do, point people to the old DMs guides and say "hey, here's a pamphlet for the changes, you can sort them out yourself"? Of course the majority of a dungeon masters guide is going to be rehash, there's only so much you can say about world building and encounter design...

    D&D 5E (2014) Halflings Of The Corn

The artwork is bad, yeah, but it wouldn't really factor into my decision whether to play them or not. I mean, this is a game where you can play as a 7 foot tall green man with tusks and a pig nose fighting a creature made entirely of eyes and mouths, and a person with a little bit overly large...

    D&D 3.x SANTA CLAUS for D&D 3E

Gah, I can't believe how awful 3E monster stat blocks were. *shudders* pretty good write up overall though.

    D&D 5E (2014) Countering Dispel Magic

I'm confused. There already is a check in it, 10+spell level vs d20+ability score. A level 9 spell will be a 19, which is a pretty high DC.

D&D 5E (2014) How many enemies Hunter's Volley attack can hit?

Looks like it's time to stack some Modrons.
