    Help Me Understand Fate Core

ThirdWizard, with all due respect, I don't believe you're correct about this. Page 70 of the FATE Core rulebook explicitly states: "Free invocations work like normal ones except in two ways: no fate points are exchanged, and you can stack them with a normal invocation for a better bonus."

    Help Me Understand Fate Core

I think this example may prove a little confusing because it sounds like, in this instance, the Aspect "Can't Straight Think... Concussion Maybe," being caused by a hard hit, gets a free invoke, possibly two if you succeeded with style (FATE Core, p. 70). In that case, no Fate Points are exchanged.

Ideas for Running FATE Core Cthulhu

With respect to the suggestions about Corruption and Madness, in the first post, I asked the folks on the Yahoo!Group whether Provoke vs. Will to do Mental Stress Track damage was enough. One poster answered, "Using Mental stress for Madness is one option, though it means that you can be taken...

Ideas for Running FATE Core Cthulhu

Found these suggestions on Black Dog of Doom's blog. Some stuff has been tweaked from Fudge to FATE Core: Sanity and Going Mad There is no Sanity statistic, but do not fear, characters will go mad! Rather than tracking a figure for Sanity as the CoC system does, under FATE I suggest that...

Ideas for Running FATE Core Cthulhu

While aware that there is a WWII Cthulhu FATE Kickstarter called "Achtung! Cthulhu" in the works, I asked the folks on the FateRPG Yahoo!Group for ideas about how to run a Cthulhu game using FATE Core. Some ideas I had off the top of my head for tweaks to the Core system for Cthulu included...

    Location-in-Motion FAQ

Mmmm....I really like this: Recently, a style of DMing known as Location-in-Motion has become a bit of a thing on various RPG boards, and it interested me. Even if this isn't something you find helpful, it's an interesting read. What is LIM? LIM is a style of DMing in which...

I need ideas for a Fire Giant plot point encounter...

What if the Giant can't wait to get rid of the key? Maybe the key is cursed, and it's the reason he was transformed into a fire giant. It's chained around his neck, and he's never been able to get it off because the enchanted chain resists his giant strength. But intrepid adventurers with...

    NON-Action/Adventure Games

Yeah, you got it, Celebrim. That's more or less what I mean by non-action/adventure. And yes, our Cthulhu games have only "some" action/adventure elements, and are *mostly* otherwise. If you've got the right group, you can pull it off with Cthulhu (I'm talking about the Chaosium version).

    NON-Action/Adventure Games

Good plots, folks! Well done! You raise an interesting query, Ahnehnois. What about RomComs or procedural dramas? Has anyone ever tried something along these lines?

    NON-Action/Adventure Games

Has anyone ever run a roleplaying game that was NOT an Action/Adventure story? If so, what gaming system did you use, and what was your plot? Cthulhu is the closest thing I can think of to non-Action/Adventure, but even that tends to include some adventure story elements.

    Creepy...

WOW! This thread really works! I ran a FATE game set in Tolkien's Second Age, where the PCs found themselves in the halls of a necromancer in the remains of Angband. I used as many of these suggestions as possible, and they said (their words), that "This was the creepiest session you've ever...

    Creepy...

WHEW. Read through this entire thread. And aside from anything involving children, here is what I found interesting in the thread, for those who don't want to spend the time reading it from beginning to end: HOW TO BE CREEPY: Inversion: take something that is otherwise cute and associated...

    Creepy...

For my FATE of the Rings game (set in Tolkien's 2nd Age), I have lately been using TSR's old "Keep on the Borderlands" module, with the kingdom of Carn Dum (what Angmar was called before it was Angmar) and the Witch-King (still a Man at this point) in place of the eponymous keep and its...

Dad's Proud Moment: Running for the Kids

All good ideas, Gil! When we play again, I'll be sure to use your ideas!

Dad's Proud Moment: Running for the Kids

Well, the kids and I played a roleplaying game together for the first time today! FATE Accelerated Edition (FAE), set in a sword-and-sorcery setting. My eight-year-old son played a tall, blue-skinned, half-dragon White Wizard named Rockbert (his High Concept) whose dragon side of him is taking...

The character concept you never got to play...

I've always wanted to play a giant mecha pilot...specifically, one of five whose mechas join together to form an uber-giant-mecha: 1. The young, pure-hearted-but-serious leader of the group 2. The slightly older, slightly darker and more cynical counterpart to #1 3. The girl 4. The big guy...

    Is there a game like...

Yes, Exalted was White Wolf's fantasy game. Anyway, you ninja'd me, Ratskinner! I was going to recommend FATE as well. You could use FATE Core or Fate Accelerated Edition (FAE), which are basically the new, fourth edition of the game. There are also a few third edition sword-and-sorcery...

Does anybody still play d20 Modern/Future/Past/Apocalypse

Yes...well...no. I should say...I used it for a few games, such as an urban fantasy game set in Tolkien's Seventh Age. That was fun, but ended in a TPK. (Not really...real life got in the way just after a cliff-hanger, and in my mind, I imagine that the party never made it out of the...

Dad's Proud Moment: Running for the Kids

Okay, here's what I'm thinking, based on some ideas suggested by friendly members of the FATE Yahoo!Group: An evil dragon has kidnapped the princess's parents with demands for all the gold and magic (arcane or faerie) in the kingdom as ransom. Do they hand it over or try another solution...

Dad's Proud Moment: Running for the Kids

Okay, folks...we are through the looking glass: Tomorrow, Saturday, is usually the day I take the kids (ages 8, 7 and 5) to the beach, but it's going to be a rainy Saturday. What to do, what to do? During a commercial for the cartoon "Adventure Time" -- which frequently makes references to...
